![“Prospect.6: The Future Is Present, The Harbinger Is Home,” features work from @visionsandverbs series “Vanishing Black Bars & Lounges.”
Mining the visual language of vintage liquor advertisements, this series juxtaposes New Orleanians with fictitious spirits and punchy text. This photograph, “Nero's Vino,” features an effortlessly cool central figure in large sunglasses and a neck scarf, arm casually draped over a white convertible's maroon leather seat, and wine glass in hand.
The ad's accompanying text, however, is not selling Nero's Vino. Instead, it offers a stark reminder: retaining historic Black establishments, rather than selling them, is invaluable. Through the title, Harris hints at the Great Fire of Rome - rumored to have been ordered by the unpredictable Roman Emperor, Nero (37 CE-68 CE), to clear space for a new palace. As New Orleans grapples with ongoing gentrification and the displacement of historic Black bars and establishments, Harris' advertisements warn of impending cultural losses.
