![Happy Birthday to Ogden Museum of Southern Art Permanent Collection Artist John T. Scott!
Today, we honor the life and legacy of one of New Orleans' most transformative artists. Born on this day in 1940, John T. Scott was not only a prolific sculptor but a visionary who translated the rhythm, culture and spirit of his hometown into dazzling works of art.
From kinetic sculptures that move like jazz to prints that speak to struggle and resilience, Scott’s work is deeply rooted in the Afro-Caribbean traditions of New Orleans and the Black experience in America.
Raised in the Lower Ninth Ward, Scott studied at @xula1925 and @michiganstateu. He later returned to Xavier to teach and inspire generations of artists for four decades.
In 1992, after receiving a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, Scott expanded his practice and created several monumental site-specific works across New Orleans, including pieces at the @neworleansmuseumofart and Xavier’s campus.
Though Hurricane Katrina forced him from the city he loved, Scott’s legacy continues to thrive. In 2022, The Helis Foundation @johnscottcenter opened to the public—celebrating his life and vision through exhibitions, education and community programs.
We remember and celebrate the enduring brilliance of a man whose art truly moved with the rhythm of the city.
