Sonya Yong James was born in 1971 in Knoxville, Tennessee. A lifelong Southerner, she has lived for the past forty years in Atlanta, Georgia. The studio practice of Sonya Yong James utilizes the textile techniques of weaving, knitting, spinning, dying, felting animal hair, and sewing. Combined with ceramics and found art assemblage, she engages fiber arts to produce abstract sculptures and installations. While referencing narrative and the figurative concepts of body and landscape, her works remain formally abstract.
Supplies
Found Objects, Scissors, Tape, Color Paper (Sub: Cloth, String), Sheet of Paper (Cardstock, Cardboard)
Instructions
Step 1: Choose your material. Think about what texture and color you want your piece to have. Examples of materials to use: string, paper, cloth etc. If you choose to use paper or cloth, use scissors to cut the material into strips. To create additional texture roll the strips into “string”.
Step 2: Arrange your materials on your background. Think about the composition. What lines or shapes do the materials create across the background? Think about layering materials to create depth.
Step 3: Once you have decided on an arrangement use tape to secure your material to the back of the sheet. Notice how the material hangs and drapes in your piece.
Step 4 (Optional): Consider adding layers and more texture to your piece by draping it with another layer of the same or different material if available.
Step 5 (Optional): Add content to your piece by hanging found objects in your piece.
Vocabulary
Found object — a thing that someone else has given or thrown away that is often repurposed by artists
Texture – the surface quality of a work of art
Abstract – an artwork that is comprised of shapes and colors
Mixed Media — more than one material used to create artwork, such as found objects and fabric

Sonya Yong James, sureña de toda la vida, nació en 1971 en Knoxville, Tennessee y vivió en Atlanta, Georgia los últimos cuarenta años. La práctica del estudio de Sonya Yong James utiliza las técnicas textiles de tejido, tejido de punto, hilado, pigmentación, fieltro con pelo de animal y costura. Al combinar cerámica con ensamblajes hechos con objetos encontrados, Sonya emplea el arte de la fibra para producir escultura e instalaciones abstractas. Si bien hace una referencia narrativa y figurativa a los conceptos de cuerpo y paisaje, su obra continúa siendo formalmente abstracta.
Materiales
Objetos encontrados, tijeras, cinta adhesiva, papel de color (telas o hilos), hoja de papel (cartulinas o cartón)
Instrucciones
Paso 1: Elige el material. Piensa qué texturas y colores quieres que tenga tu pieza. Ejemplos de
materiales para usar: hilo, papel, telas, etc. Si decides utilizar papel o telas, utiliza tijeras para
cortar el material en tiras. Para crear textura adicional, enrolla las tiras como si fueran cuerdas.
Paso 2: Coloca los materiales en tu fondo. Piensa en la composición. ¿Qué líneas o formas crean los
materiales en el fondo? Piensa en superponer materiales para crear profundidad.
Paso 3: Luego de decidir la forma en la que organizarás tus materiales, utiliza cinta adhesiva para
pegarlos en el fondo de la hoja. Observa como los materiales cuelgan en forma de cortina en tu pieza.
Paso 4 (Opcional): Considera agregar capas y más textura, colocando otra capa del mismo material o
uno distinto, si tienes.
Paso 5 (Opcional): Añade contenido a tu pieza, colocando más objetos encontrados.
Vocabulario
Objeto encontrado: un objeto que alguien donó o descartó y que los artistas reutilizan para hacer arte.
Textura: la calidad de la superficie de una obra de arte.
Abstracto: una obra de arte compuesta por formas y colores.
Técnica mixta: la utilización de más de un material para hacer obras de arte, como por ejemplo objetos
encontrados y tela.
