Sister Gertrude Morgan was born in Alabama in 1900 and moved to New Orleans in the 1930s, where she was a street preacher for several years. Along with two other female street preachers, Sister Morgan used the contributions she received from her sermons to build a chapel and open a childcare center that provided food and shelter to women and children in need. Sister Morgan later became a self-taught artist, and is known for her use of calligraphy in her mixed media paintings that convey spiritual or scriptural messages.
Supplies
Mirror, Paper, Pencil, Colored Pencils, Black Pen
Instructions
Step 1: Think of a message that you would like to share. It can be an idea you have, something you believe in, a story you wrote, a passage from your favorite book or poem, or even just a journal entry about how you’re feeling today. Get out a sheet of paper and practice writing your message in some different handwriting styles – like cursive, capital letters, or bubble letters – and pick out your favorite.
Step 2: Get out your mirror and a new piece of paper. Look at yourself in the mirror, studying the shapes of your face and/or body. Using your pencil, draw your self-portrait. Feel free to experiment with different poses and objects. Do you want to be sitting in a chair? Wearing a cool hat? Holding your pet?
Step 3: Use your colored pencils to color in your self-portrait and whatever other items you decided to include in your drawing.
Step 4: Using your black pen, fill in the background of your drawing with the message that you wrote down earlier in the handwriting style you chose. Make sure to write around your portrait, and not on top of it.
Step 5: Give yourself a pat on the back, because you’ve created your very own revelatory self-portrait!

La Hermana Gertrude Morgan nació en Alabama en el 1900 y se mudó a Nueva Orleans en los años 1930, lugar donde se dedicó a predicar en las calles por varios años. Junto a otras dos mujeres predicadoras, la Hermana Morgan utilizaba las contribuciones que recibía de sus sermones para construir una capilla y abrir un centro de cuidado infantil que brindara comida y refugio a mujeres y niños necesitados. Más tarde, la Hermana Morgan se convirtió en una artista autodidacta y es conocida por utilizar caligrafía en sus pinturas de técnica mixta, los cuales transmiten mensajes espirituales o bíblicos.
Materiales
Espejo, papel, lápiz, lápices de colores, lapicera negra.
Instrucciones
Paso 1: Piensa en un mensaje que te gustaría compartir. Puede ser una idea, algo en lo que creas, una historia que hayas escrito, un fragmento de tu libro o poema favorito, o incluso un fragmento de tu diario que exprese cómo te sientes hoy. Toma una hoja de papel y practica escribir tu mensaje con distintos tipos de caligrafía (como cursiva, mayúsculas o letras burbuja) y elige tu favorita.
Paso 2: Toma el espejo y una nueva hoja de papel. Mírate en el espejo y observa las formas de tu cara y/o cuerpo. Utiliza el lápiz para dibujar tu autorretrato. Siéntete libre para experimentar con diferentes poses y objetos. ¿Quieres estar sentado en una silla? ¿Usar un genial sombrero? ¿Posar con tu mascota?
Paso 3: Utiliza los lápices de colores para colorear tu autorretrato y cualquier otro objeto que hayas decidido incluir en tu dibujo.
Paso 4: Utiliza la lapicera negra para rellenar el fondo de tu dibujo con el mensaje que escribiste antes, en la caligrafía que hayas elegido. Asegúrate de escribir alrededor de todo el retrato y no sólo arriba de él.
Paso 5: ¡Puedes darte una palmadita en la espalda porque creaste tu primer autorretrato revelador!
