“I identify as an artist of the Anthropocene. I make sgraffito carved ceramics in reverence to and wonder of the natural systems presently collapsing due to climate crisis. Immersing myself in research for a piece is a way for me to connect with the biophilia that is inherent to our own human species. In the imagined wilderness of the Gulf South, I connect to the ancient parts of my brain’s evolution that associates beauty, belonging and worship with the flora and fauna that compose our habitat. I strive to inspire my audience to remember those connections in the depths of their own minds – to remember the intrinsic relationship with nature that our species’ survival depends on.” – Abbey Kuhe
