Culture & Cocktails An Insider’s Perspective into Jazz Photographer Herman Leonard with Jenny Bagart

/// May 7 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for Culture & Cocktails, Ogden Museum’s evening series celebrating art, ideas and conversation. This evening features Bradley Sumrall, Curator of the Collection, in conversation with Jenny Bagart, former business and archive manager to the legendary jazz photographer Herman Leonard.

Begin your night with a private tour of Herman Leonard: Images of Jazz presented by The Helis Foundation, with Bradley Sumrall, while enjoying a signature cocktail inspired by its themes. Following the tour, Bagert will share an insider’s perspective on what makes this collection of photographs so distinctive. Having managed Leonard’s archive for a decade and counted him as a friend, Bagert offers a rare, firsthand view of his work and creative process—including his approaches to lighting, shooting and printing. She will also reflect on what made him one of the most memorable people in the room and what set him apart as both a person and an artist.

About Jenny Bagert

Jenny Bagert is a photographer who fell in love with the business. Over a twenty-five-year career, she has been deeply rooted in every facet of photography, working with artists, galleries and collectors and work from the 19th century to the present.

Bagert started taking pictures and creating in the darkroom when she was 12. In her twenties, she specialized in working with musicians, including Grammy-winning artists. At age 24, she became business and archive manager to the legendary jazz photographer Herman Leonard. With Leonard, Bagert learned the business and had the opportunity to work on life-changing projects: archiving Leonard’s vast collection, working on the Ken Burns documentary “Jazz,” editing books and managing shoots with such greats as Tony Bennett and Lenny Kravitz.

In 2006, she formed Jenny Bagert Consulting, offering business and project management in photography. Based in her beloved hometown of New Orleans, Bagert and her team serve an extensive client roster and love every day of it!
