(NEW ORLEANS, LA) – Ogden Museum of Southern Art is pleased to announce that the museum has been awarded a $13,800 grant from the Darryl Chappell Foundation to fund a photographer-in-residence from April to May 2022. The application is open to Afrodescendants 21+ who have been practicing photography for the past five years. Candidates from across the globe will be reviewed, but strong consideration will be given to photographers living and working in the rural American South.
Ogden Museum’s curatorial department will review photographer-in-residence applicants and select the final candidate based on the criteria and selection process determined in collaboration with the Darryl Chappell Foundation.
The selected photographer will work closely with the Ogden Museum curatorial department along with a mentor – an established and prominent local Black photographer – to grow and foster the resident’s connections and presence within the New Orleans arts community. The Darryl Chappell Foundation and the Xavier University of Louisiana art department will provide additional mentorship.
Online educational programming will feature the resident photographer, and a solo exhibition of 3-10 of their works (dependent on size) will be on view at Ogden Museum at the conclusion of the residency period. Two works of art, made by the photographer during or before their residency, will be added to the museum’s permanent collection following the show.
“Over the last ten years the focus of Ogden Museum’s photography programming has been promoting, cultivating and collecting works by underrepresented, marginalized and emerging photographers,” says William Pittman Andrews, Executive Director of Ogden Museum. “The Darryl Chappell Foundation Photographer-in-Residence grant will help us to continue our efforts to support the artist community and lift up the powerful artistic voices of our time.”
“Through this opportunity, the connection between Ogden Museum with the local urban culture of New Orleans and the rural communities of the South can be strengthened and expanded moving into the future,” says Richard McCabe, Curator of Photography at Ogden Museum.
The selected candidate will receive a stipend of $6,000, with a living allowance of $4,000 and a travel allowance of $1,000.
A portion of the grant ($2,500, 18%) is provided through the generous support of Darryl Chappell Foundation art patron, Nessa Feddis, a prominent attorney in Washington, D.C. Feddis is contributing a gift of $2,500 through her Fidelity Charitable Donor-Advised Fund account directly to Ogden Museum to support a Darryl Chappell Foundation Photographer-in-Resident.
Further information about the application and selection process will be announced in the fall of 2021 at www.ogdenmuseum.org.
