Maliya Vaughan Artist Statement

This boat represents African-American slavery and its transformation in America. It was inspired by my dad who was sentenced 25 to life after the enactment of the California 3 strikes law. I hope it will inspire others to learn and understand the influence of mass incarceration among African-American communities.

The creation of this lock was inspired by this verse from the Holy Bible,

“Yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.”

Proverbs 2:3-5 ESV
