Featuring artwork by students attending Dillard University and Xavier University of Louisiana.
Ogden Museum of Southern Art and The New Orleans Chapter of The
Links, Incorporated are proud to celebrate the 10th Anniversary the HBCU
Art Showcase. The partnership was formed ten years ago to create an
exhibition that would spotlight works created by students attending
Louisiana’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Since
then, the HBCU Art Showcase has been presented annually in the
Museum’s Education Gallery, a space designated to honor the teaching of
art and works created by students in the Southern region of the United
States.
A fundamental objective of Ogden Museum is to explore the diversity of
backgrounds, experiences and ideas that artists and viewers bring to the
museum experience. To this end, the Learning and Engagement
Department seeks to present a variety of perspectives to broaden and
enrich our understanding of Southern identity. Ogden Museum is proud to
amplify the voices and work of young students of color through this
showcase.
Ogden Museum applauds The New Orleans Chapter of The Links,
Incorporated for their continued support of this exhibition. Many thanks are
also extended to John Barnes of Dillard University; Ron Bechet, Christian
Dinh, Sheleen Jones, Eddie Lanieri and Joan Ulmer of Xavier University for
their enthusiastic assistance with the organization and presentation of the
exhibition.
Finally, gratitude is extended to the students for their hard work and artistic
vision. The HBCU Art Showcase has become a highlight in the Ogden
Museum’s exhibition calendar and an important component in the
advancement towards racial equity.
Since it was chartered on November 20, 1957, members of The New Orleans (LA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated have engaged in implementing program services through the five National Program Facets: Services to Youth, International Trends and Services, National Trends and Services, Health and Human Services and The Arts. The Chapter’s major initiatives include sponsoring the local competition for the Scripps National Spelling Bee; a partnership with Mary McCloud Bethune Elementary School; Obesity Awareness Day; and Law Day, in which Bethune Elementary School students are trained in legal proceedings and participate in a mock trial. The main focus areas are: financial support for college students, education and youth activities to assist youth in fulfilling their intellectual potential; addressing issues affecting the African American community through health and wellness projects; fostering cultural appreciation through the arts; and collaborating with other Link chapters to provide services and assistance to global friends. Tracey Flemings-Davillier is the President of the Chapter. For more information, visit www.neworleanslinks.org and follow the Chapter on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @NewOrleansLinks.

University Mission Statement
Dillard University is a historically Black institution that cultivates leaders
who live ethically, think and communicate precisely and act courageously to
make the world a better place. Dillard University attracts the leaders,
thinkers, and artists of tomorrow, and equips them with the tools they need
to imagine and build a better world for everyone.
Visual Arts Program
The mission of the Visual Arts Program is to prepare students for rewarding
careers in the visual arts through a dynamic visual arts curriculum and a
comprehensive liberal arts education. The visual arts program provides
individualized studio-arts training for the student whose goal it is to become
a practicing studio artist, curator, designer, photographer, art historian, or
teacher. The Visual Arts Program utilizes community partnerships to place
students in professional environments where they can receive additional
training, support, recommendations, and employment. The program also
prepares students to enter graduate programs in studio art, art history, arts
education, graphic design/media arts, museum studies, art management or
art therapy.
Student Learning Outcomes
– Demonstrate proficiency in major aspects, techniques and directions
in chosen medium or media.
– Analyze works of art perceptively and valuate them critically by using
a comprehensive knowledge of art history.
– Achieve the highest level of technical ability in chosen media and its
expressive possibilities.
– Exhibit and promote evidence of development of studio-art practices
within the facilities of the art gallery and to have artwork critiqued
and discussed.
University Mission Statement
Xavier University of Louisiana, founded by Saint Katharine Drexel and the
Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, is Catholic and historically Black. The
ultimate purpose of the University is to contribute to the promotion of a
more just and humane society by preparing its students to assume roles of
leadership and service in a global society. This preparation takes place in a
diverse learning and teaching environment that incorporates all relevant
educational means, including research and community service.
Department of Art and Performance Studies
The Department of Art and Performance Studies provides teaching and
guidance in a well-rounded, stimulating atmosphere that calls forth each
student’s potential. Gaining an education in traditional and contemporary
art and design practices, students are prepared for a future in a diverse
creative field as academics or practitioners, through fundamental
professional preparation through broad studio activities. We assist the
individual in finding and building upon their own strengths in an effort to
pursue a successful arts career. Problem solving, research, community
collaboration and the integration of creative and technical practices are the
root of the visual arts program.
Encouraging professional experiences while in school, Art majors are
required to develop a portfolio and learn to practice in a pluralistic art
community. Many students engage in internship opportunities as artists and
designers and exhibit work in local galleries and museums. Upper-class Art
majors have the opportunity to conduct undergraduate research, attend
conferences and research travel in support of the University’s mission. The
Art Department is committed to preparing individuals to be visually aware
and socially conscious. Students investigate and develop studio skills,
historical analysis, individual aesthetics, and methods of evaluation within a
mentored environment. Courses are designed to enhance fundamental
professional training for all students, stimulate intellectual curiosity, and
provide an opportunity to expand personal creative experiences.
