Artist Spotlight: Jacob Reptile

March - July 2020

Jacob Reptile is dissecting and celebrating the material world human’s have fabricated and the natural neglected world we are a part of by choosing materials that are discarded before their time. Using the fabrics that surround us he speaks to our sense of memory and gives a new life to the materials saving them from the landfill. Jacob hopes to make plants that we are already bonded to. Making Forever Plants has stemmed out from making a huggable cactus you can’t kill into advocating for a circulator economy.

In some of his larger works he is creating both native plants, invasive species  and micro ecosystems of Louisiana and Gulf South. The materials are all second hand and mostly made of plastics that are suffocating us and the water ways just like the invasive plants themselves. Jacob is interested in exploring the history of flora and fauna that passed on their molecules into the plants that live today and how that recycling can be done in the material world of humans.
