Lizz Freeman is a community-taught artist who began showing her work at 15. Her multi-disciplinary practice began with photography and has evolved to encompass textile arts, printmaking and installation. Her decades-long work with clothing produced an archive of thousands of fabric swatches from which she draws to create her complex and intriguing sewn assemblages. Freeman teaches and has a studio practice in New Orleans, where she lives with her husband and daughter.
Artist Statement
My Artist Spotlight at Ogden Museum will include the first in a new series of quilts called Durable Goods. Made from offcuts, they embrace a ‘no waste’ philosophy in my studio. The compositions are improvisational and bold, and the fabrics are soft and supple. The title of this series is a nod to the fact that quilts are made to last a lifetime. Smaller wall hanging New Orleans Sewn Assemblages will also be on display. These pieces combine colorful textiles through machine and hand sewing and result in painting-like compositions.
