Carmen Herrera was a famed Cuban American abstract painter, who, although working as early as the 1940s, did not gain true recognition until her late 80s, having passed away in 2022 at the age of 106. Today, her work is included in several public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Museum of Fine Arts.

Herrera’s Untitled Estructura (Red) is the first of her monumental sculptures to be acquired for public view in North America and is in downtown New Orleans along the Poydras Corridor Sculpture Exhibition (PCSE).

PCSE is an outdoor, public sculpture exhibition, spanning Poydras Street between Convention Center Blvd and Lasalle St in downtown New Orleans. The exhibition has installed over 40 sculptures, with 15 currently on view, by artists of local and international fame and is the South’s leading rotating sculpture exhibition. It is exclusively funded by The Helis Foundation, with partners Ogden Museum of Southern Art and City of New Orleans Department of Parks and Parkways.

Herrera’s Untitled Estructura (Red), composed of painted aluminum and standing eight feet tall, is recognized for its simplicity juxtaposed with bold, dramatic color. Herrera began the sketches and preparations for her Estructuras (Structures) in the late 1960s, yet her first major exhibition of outdoor sculptures did not take place until 2019 in New York.
