As Ogden Museum of Southern Art closes out its 20th year, we look back on the impact and accomplishments of the Museum and are filled with gratitude for the thousands of supporters who have made these milestones possible. The past two decades have been filled with award-winning exhibitions, an inspiring Ogden After Hours after Hurricane Katrina, collaborations with countless organizations, a growing permanent collection, a pivot to engaging virtual programs in 2020 and so much more.

A look back in History

2003

Ogden Museum of Southern Art hosts its grand opening with the inaugural exhibition The Story of the South: Art & Culture, 1890-2003. Since then, over 400 exhibitions have been installed at Ogden Museum.


2005

The museum is one of the first cultural institutions to open its doors to the community post the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Over 600 people gather in Goldring Hall for an Ogden After Hours performance by James Andrews.


2007

The Patrick F. Taylor Library open to preview audiences with the special exhibition Ogun Meets Vulcan: Ironworkers of Alabama, featuring the work of Thornton Dial, Lonnie Holley, Joe Minter, Ronald Lockett and Charlie Lucas.


 

2008

Families attend the museum at no cost for a day of fun art activities as part of the very first Free Family Day. Since 2008, 44 Free Family Days have been held.


2011

Louisiana Contemporary, Presented by The Helis Foundation opens for the first time and gives 45 Louisiana artists the opportunity to show their work. In the last twelve years, 569 artists have been represented by this exhibition.


2013

HBCU Art Showcase, Presented in partnership with The New Orleans Chapter of the Links, Inc. is designed to spotlight works created by students attending Louisiana’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities.


 

2015

The Teen Internship Program is recognized with the highest honor for out-of-school programs that celebrate the creativity of young people, the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award.


2018

240 photographs are featured in Ogden Museum’s largest photography exhibition to date, New Southern Photography.


2020

The COVID-19 virus prevents in-person visitation and Ogden Museum offers new programming, such as Virtual Field Trips and O-riginal Art Activities, to engage 2,255 people remotely throughout the year.


2023

Knowing Who We Are: A 25th Anniversary Exhibition opens and includes 45 pieces that are on view for the first time at the Museum.
