(NEW ORLEANS, LA) – Ogden Museum of Southern Art has opened the call for photographers to apply to the Darryl Chappell Foundation photographer-in-residence program. The Museum was awarded $13,800 by the Darryl Chappell Foundation this past summer to fund a photographer-in-residence program. The application is open to Afrodescendants 21+ who have been practicing photography for the past five years. Candidates from across the globe will be reviewed, but strong consideration will be given to photographers living and working in the rural American South.
Important dates:
- Application opens on Friday, September 29, 2021. Applicants may apply with the link posted on ogdenmuseum.org or mail an application to Ogden Museum of Southern Art.
- Online entries will close at 11:59 p.m. Central Time Zone on Tuesday, November 23, 2021.
- The selected resident and other applicants will be notified the week of December 13, 2021 on decision.
- The Darryl Chappell Foundation Photographer in Residency program will begin at Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, LA on April 15, 2022 and run through June 17, 2022 (2 months). These dates are flexible and can shift to accommodate a summer residency. Exact residency dates will be determined by Ogden Museum with input from the winning applicant.
Ogden Museum’s curatorial department will review photographer-in-residence applicants and select the final candidate based on the criteria and selection process determined in collaboration with the Darryl Chappell Foundation.
The selected photographer will work closely with the Ogden Museum curatorial department, meeting with Photography Curator Richard McCabe and also with local mentor, photographer L. Kasimu Harris, to grow and foster the resident’s connections and presence within the New Orleans arts community.
Online educational programming will feature the resident photographer, and a solo exhibition of 3-10 of their works (dependent on size) will be on view at Ogden Museum at the conclusion of the residency period. Two works of art, made by the photographer during or before their residency, will be added to the museum’s permanent collection following the show.
“Over the last ten years the focus of Ogden Museum’s photography programming has been promoting, cultivating and collecting works by underrepresented, marginalized and emerging photographers,” says William Pittman Andrews, Executive Director of Ogden Museum. “The Darryl Chappell Foundation Photographer-in-Residence grant will help us to continue our efforts to support the artist community and lift up the powerful artistic voices of our time.”
“Through this opportunity, the connection between Ogden Museum with the local urban culture of New Orleans and the rural communities of the South can be strengthened and expanded moving into the future,” says Richard McCabe, Curator of Photography at Ogden Museum.
The selected candidate will receive a stipend of $6,000, a living allowance of $4,000 and a travel allowance of $1,000.
A portion of the grant is provided through the generous support of Darryl Chappell Foundation art patron, Nessa Feddis, a prominent attorney in Washington, D.C. Feddis is contributing a gift of $2,500 to support this flagship partnership with the Darryl Chappell Foundation Photographer-in-Residence program.
