James “J.P.” Scott was a Louisiana folk artist who built model boats made from found objects. Throughout most of his life, Scott worked on construction sites and fishing boats. Scott combined his craftsmanship with folk art to create models of boats that he saw in the bayous around New Orleans.
Supplies
Paper, Pencil, Pen, Markers, Eraser
Instructions
Step 1: Look at James “J.P” Scott’s artwork, Pogee Boat. What do you notice about the sculpture? Scott often created model boats. He was very familiar with his subject matter, spending numerous hours working on fishing boats.
Step 2: Use Google with a parent or guardian’s permission and search “Steamboats” or “Fishing Boats” to find a boat to draw. If you’re not able to use the Internet, look in books for examples or use your imagination! In Scott’s model, he focuses on every detail of the boat. Look at the details on the boat you chose, what do you notice?
Step 3: Sketch the composition of your drawing! Where will you place the boat on your sheet of paper? Use a pencil to draw your boat. Start with the large section of the boat, maybe the bottom. Be sure to include all the important parts of the boat: the steam shaft, motor and deck.
Step 4: Trace over your drawing with pen. This will make your boat stand out! When you are done tracing, erase the pencil lines. Give your boat a name! Write the name across the boat, like Scott has done in his model.
Step 5: Add color to your boat. Scott uses color to bring his boats to life! Use markers to color the boat with your favorite colors.
Step 6 (Optional): Draw a background for your boat. Where is the boat? Is it on the Mississippi River or in a bayou?

James “J.P.” Scott era un artista popular de Luisiana que construyó modelos de barcos a partir de objetos encontrados. Paso 2: Utiliza Google con el permiso de un padre o tutor y busca “Barcos de vapor” o “Barcos de pesca” para encontrar un barco para dibujar. Si no puedes usar Internet, busca ejemplos en libros o usa tu imaginación. En su modelo, Scott se centra en cada detalle del barco. Mira los detalles del barco que elegiste, ¿qué notas?
Paso 3: ¡Dibuja la composición de tu dibujo! ¿Dónde colocarás el bote en tu hoja de papel? Usa un lápiz para dibujar tu bote. Comienza con la sección grande del bote, tal vez el fondo. Asegúrate de incluir todas las partes importantes del barco: el eje de vapor, el motor y la cubierta.
