As the evening unfolds\, curators and guest scholars will lead an engaging discussion delving into artistic styles\, traditions\, techniques and the deeper stories behind the art. Each Culture & Cocktails evening offers a chance to see art from a new perspective\, spark meaningful dialogue and connect more deeply with the works on view. \nThis evening\, photographer and musician Clint Maedgen joins Richard McCabe\, Curator of Photography\, for a deep dive into Maedgen’s photographs on view in The Unending Stream: Chapter II\, his signature photographic technique and the role that music plays in his work. \n$20 members / $25 not-yet-members \nRegister \n\nAbout Clint Maedgen \nClint Maedgen is a photographer and musician from New Orleans\, Louisiana. He works in color using continuous strips of 35mm film fused with the delicate layering of subtle tones and dynamic urban themes\, a technique he has been developing for decades. His intention is to impress upon the viewer an initial sense of wonder\, curiosity\, joy and playfulness through a provocative visual commentary on modern culture. Maedgen’s images reframe the familiar and everyday within unexpected contexts\, reflecting his vision of a world in constant motion. In addition to being a photographer\, Maedgen has enjoyed a prolific career as a professional musician in New Orleans for over 30 years. He was the frontman for the rock band Liquidrone from 1992 through 2004 and the creator of the interactive theatrical cabaret\, game show and musical band\, The New Orleans Bingo! Show from 2001 through 2012. Maedgen is also a member of the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, with whom he has traveled the world for twenty years and counting. He is currently releasing his own brand of original\, eclectic music under his name as a singer/songwriter. You can find his entire music catalog at Bandcamp.com and all streaming apps. \nArtist Statement \nMy art is a collage of very specific images that insist on being part of the larger story that I am committing to film. All of my images are shot with continuous film and the finished work emerges organically as a result of careful timing. There is no digital image manipulation involved. These treasures are often found in the most unusual of places. I’ve learned to keep my camera with me at all times\, always prepared to participate in the magic of synchronicity. My Lomo camera is the ultimate instrument for my storytelling – it continues to surprise me in its interpretation of what I’m capturing. It is a crucial part of my process. My excursions feel like a scavenger hunt\, with hidden gems around every corner. You will find me somewhere among abandoned gas stations and subway systems\, graffitied streets and advertising hubs\, foreign elevators and shadows\, collecting and conjuring these patterns and shapes and blending them all together. Welcome to the world as I see it!

Melding a practice repetitive actions through weaving\, printing and stitching\, Koehn’s work conjures glimpses into alternate and constructed realities. Her work is rooted in place and finds grounding through explorations of her present environments and research into their ecological pasts\, presents and futures. Molly Koehn received an MFA with an emphasis in fibers from Arizona State University (2017) and BFA in drawing from Fort Hays State University (2013). Koehn’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is in several collections\, including the Houston Endowment’s permanent collection. In addition to keeping a studio practice\, Molly Koehn also teaches workshops and classes regularly.

DESCRIPTION:Distilling the Landscape \nTuesday\, March 24 | 1 – 2:30 p.m. – Meet at Peristyle in City Park\nTuesday\, March 31 & Tuesday\, April 7 | 1 – 4 p.m. – Meet at Ogden Museum \nJoin teaching artist Ben Hamburger in a workshop series exploring the natural landscape through painting. \nUsing the natural landscape as inspiration\, this workshop series will focus on simplifying and organizing visual information into strong compositions of shape and color. The first session will take place off-site at City Park. At the park\, participants will sketch\, consider composition and collect reference materials. The following two sessions will take place at Ogden Museum. At the Museum\, participants will view examples of artwork from throughout history\, discuss key concepts and build foundational skills through painting exercises. Utilizing what they have learned\, participants will create their own landscape painting. \nThe workshop is open to acrylic and oil painters of all abilities with at least some prior foundational painting experience. Must be 18 or older to attend. \nAll materials are provided. Hamburger holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts from Eckerd College and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Community Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art. His work has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions around the country at locations including the Maryhill Museum of Art\, The San Bernardino County Museum and the Contemporary Art Museum of Raleigh. He has led workshops and taught courses in public schools\, universities\, art centers\, museums\, correctional facilities and nonprofit organizations around the United States\, as well as in Bolivia\, Thailand and India. Hamburger is currently an Adjunct Instructor in the School of Art and Design at Western Carolina University\, teaches painting courses at New Orleans Academy of Fine Art and leads sporadic workshops around the country. \n

He studied at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts and has taught at this same institution for 20+ years. His work has been featured in various publications including American Artist magazine.
