SUMMARY:Artist Spotlight: Janie Verret Luster
DESCRIPTION:A master palmetto basket weaver and cultural preservationist of the United Houma Nation\, Janie Verret Luster is widely recognized for her coiled half-hitch baskets\, made using an intricate weaving technique lost to the Houma for a generation. Reintroduced by Luster in the 1990s\, the hitch-coil method with a half-hitch knot—common in areas of South and Central America—is considered limited in North America to Louisiana’s largest tribe of indigenous peoples. Join art educator Mikhayla Harrell for an interactive tour and art activity exploring Southern art\, artists and artmaking. From Impressionistic landscapes to abstract painting and more\, a new theme will be investigated each month. \nFor students in grades K-4. Students must be accompanied by a caregiver. DESCRIPTION:Join ceramicist Christian Đinh for an exploration of traditional ceramic techniques. The workshop begins with an artist demo by Đinh where he will detail techniques in mapping and laying glaze designs onto a ceramic piece. Đinh references imagery that is reminiscent of his childhood\, growing up within Vietnamese culture. Attendees will develop their own imagery and learn how to apply the imagery in traditional “blue and white” glaze to a porcelain piece. \nThe workshop includes a brief tour of Knowing Who We Are: A 20th Anniversary Exhibition Made Possible by the Terra Foundation for American Art. \nAll materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring a reference image they would like to “paint” such as personal or cultural iconography. \nFinished pieces will be fired after the conclusion of the workshop. \n$45 Member / $50 Non-member \nREGISTER
