SUMMARY:A Celebration of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:In honor of the 156th anniversary of Juneteenth (short for June Nineteenth\, 1865)\, Ogden Museum of Southern Art is offering free admission on Saturday\, June 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Juneteenth is an annual holiday that celebrates the emancipation of all formerly enslaved people in the U.S. This important moment in U.S. history did not come until two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. We use this day to reflect on our country’s dark past and remain hopeful for a brighter future.\n\n \nWhile visiting Ogden Museum\, we encourage you to view our current video installation and recent acquisition\, Portrait\, number 1 man (day clean ta sun down) by Sheldon Scott. With this work\, Sheldon Scott uses his own body to create a portrait of his ancestors\, enslaved people from the Gullah/Geechee region of the Southeastern U.S.\n \nIn addition\, please view the 8th Annual HBCU Art Showcase in the Education Gallery\, presented in partnership with The New Orleans Chapter of The Links\, Incorporated. This exhibition provides a platform for young students of color to share their voice and offer commentary on the impactful times in which we all live. Featured are works of art by students attending Dillard University\, Southern University at New Orleans and Xavier University of Louisiana.\n \nOnline timed ticketing is required for this free admission day. Masks required for those who are not fully vaccinated. \n\n\nRESERVE TICKETS\n\n\n[Image: Cecilia Pedescleaux\, Selma to Montgomery\, Textile\, 2004\, Gift of John and Lyn Fischbach\, 2005.29.1] \nThis quilt from the permanent collection\, acquired in 2005\, depicts images of Civil Rights monuments\, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s quote\, “…until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

SUMMARY:In-Person Artist Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special sculpture workshop exploring Outside In\, Improvisations of Space\, a solo exhibition of MaPó Kinnord’s work throughout the span of her career. The workshop will include a guided walk- through of the exhibition\, an in-depth discussion with Kinnord\, followed by an art-making workshop led by the artist. \nLearn how to form pinch pots using contemplative clay techniques. Participants will create sculpture work through meditation\, intuition and free-forming. \nSorry\, this workshop is full. Our next Artist Workshop exploring sculptural forms will be presented by artist Sherry Owens on Saturday\, July 17. More information and registration can be found here. \n \nOutside In\, Improvisations of Space brings together works from throughout MaPó Kinnord’s career to illustrate her practice in clay. Allowing herself to be led by the material\, she finds her greatest joy in the physical act of creation “I work with clay because I love the physical interaction with the material\,” she explains. “My current work embodies the technical challenges and creative dynamic of improvisation.” Her organic clay improvisations can be considered three-dimensional drawings in space\, and the resulting forms represent the physical evidence of that act of creation.

SUMMARY:Curated Conversation with Eddie Lanieri
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 26 at 2 p.m.\, join Ogden Museum Curator of Photography\, Richard McCabe\, and New Orleans based photographer and educator\, Eddie Lanieri\, for an in-person Curated Conversation in Ogden Museum’s Patrick Taylor Library. The two will discuss Lanieri’s photography practice and photograph\, Gizelle \,which is featured in the exhibition Revelations II\, now on view. Gizelle  is from Lanieri’s Dress As Girl series. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but pre-registration is suggested. This talk will be recorded and then posted online the following week.  \nRegister\nEddie Lanieri\, Gizelle\, 2009\, Gelatin silver print\, 12.5 x 12.5 inches\, Gift of the artist\, 2012.9.1 \nInfluenced by my Italian upbringing and ideas of gender roles in Italian culture\, Dress as Girl challenges the traditional normative model of gender within hegemonic masculinity. Photographing New Orleans based drag queens in the intimate and internal settings of their homes during their ritualized transformation process\, these portraits deconstruct the dichotomies between the public and private\, and productive and reproductive labor that are often reinforced through the relationship of domestic space. With this work I am interested in how external social performances of gender are dependent on social situations and constantly negotiated through interactions of “gendered spaces”.   – Eddie Lanieri \n  \nAbout Eddie Lanieri \nEddie Lanieri is a Salzburg Global Seminar Fellow\, and was on the board of the New Orleans Photo Alliance. Complex Magazine named her one of the top 20 artists from New Orleans that you should know\, and recently British Airways working with New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau\, named her one of the 6 artists you have to see when visiting New Orleans. Her work has been exhibited internationally and nationally including shows at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, The Contemporary Arts Center of New Orleans\, Lucie Foundation\, The Center for Fine Art Photography\, Goldsmith College\, and Kinsey Institute. Her work is held in both private and public collections\, and has been supported by funding from the Mellon Foundation and Louisiana State Division of the Arts. \n  \n
