You’re welcome to join in participatory discussions about the art\, or sit back\, look and listen. The choice is yours! \nEvery First Thursday at noon\, Museum Educator Sara Echaniz will facilitate an in-depth conversation about art and artists from Ogden Museum’s permanent collection and current exhibitions. \nFree\, but pre-registration is required and space is limited. SUMMARY:OPENING DAY:
DESCRIPTION:Opening today at Ogden Museum of Southern Art is the exhibition\, Outside In\, Improvisations of Space: The Ceramic Work of Mapó Kinnord. \nOutside In\, Improvisations of Space brings together works from throughout MaPó Kinnord’s career to illustrate her practice in clay. Allowing herself to be led by the material\, she finds her greatest joy in the physical act of creation “I work with clay because I love the physical interaction with the material\,” she explains. “My current work embodies the technical challenges and creative dynamic of improvisation.” Her organic clay improvisations can be considered three-dimensional drawings in space\, and the resulting forms represent the physical evidence of that act of creation. \nToday and tomorrow\, in celebration of the exhibition opening\, Ogden Museum members get 20% off items in the Museum Store. Some exclusions may apply. \nLearn More About This Exhibition\nImage: MaPó Kinnord\, Inheritance\, 2018\, Stoneware and acrylic paint\, Collection of the artist

If you do not receive the email\, please make sure to check your junk folder. \nRegister\nMartin Payton Artist Statement: \nComing to consciousness in New Orleans\, with its many African cultural retentions\, I have found the work of African American musicians to be an extremely important aesthetic model. Their work continued the chants and polyrhythms of our African past into gospel\, blues\, jazz and currently\, hip-hop. My response has been to explore the connections between the temporal forms of music and the plastic forms of sculpture. Actual and implied movement\, contrast\, improvisation\, rhythmically orchestrated intervals\, alternating dominance of shape\, then space have all been employed in my expressive efforts in welded steel. My idea has been to use welded steel to form poetic statements around the diaspora of African history and culture while acknowledging contemporary thought and practice in visual art. \nBio photo by David Humphreys \nMartin Payton\, Dexter\, 1998\, Welded Steel\, The Michael Brown and Linda Green Collection\, 2000.11.5.

SUMMARY:Opening Day:
DESCRIPTION:Opening today at Ogden Museum of Southern Art is the exhibition\, Sheldon Scott: Portrait\, number 1 man (day clean ta sun down) \nWith Portrait\, number 1 man (day clean ta sun down)\, Sheldon Scott uses his own body to create a portrait of his ancestors\, enslaved Africans from the Gullah Geechee region of the Southeastern U.S. The 12 hour and 20 minute film\, set in the rice fields of the former labor camp where his ancestors were enslaved\, endures a typical work day from dawn till dusk\, where the artist husks rice by hand\, one grain at a time. Through using his own body to represent an entire community\, Scott restores humanity to the narrative of slavery in the American South. \nToday and tomorrow\, in celebration of the exhibition opening\, Ogden Museum members get 20% off items in the Museum Store. Some exclusions may apply. \nLearn More About This Exhibition\nImage: Sheldon Scott\, Still from Portrait\, number 1 man (day clean ta sun down)\, 2018\, Performance with rice and HD video\, Promised gift of Dale Mott and Ken Hyle
