This four-week session will draw inspiration from the Ogden Museum’s permanent collection and works currently on exhibition in Entwined: Ritual Wrapping and Binding in Contemporary Southern Art. \nArtists investigated will include Sonya Yong James\, Sister Gertrude Morgan\, Howard Finster and others whose practices focus on the spiritual and healing elements of art-making and art objects. The course will also study historical resources relating to spirituality in art and neurological “bottom up and top down” brain processing. Learn how these concepts can inform your artistic practices\, enhance creative flow and contribute to your overall wellness. \nPlease come prepared with the art supplies listed below. Inspired by a meeting between Martin Luther King Jr. and then exiled Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh. They met in Chicago to discuss community\, peace\, freedom and their shared vision of a more just world built on the foundation of nonviolence. No previous experience with meditation is required.\nLearn more about Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy through storytelling and a presentation titled “10 Fun Facts on Dr. King” with New Orleans native and educator Andrea Heard. This session is dedicated to looking at and making artwork inspired by the theme of Feeling Healthy and Strong. \nArtists will learn about social emotional responses to art and stressors in their day to day lives with weekly yoga\, breathing and light exercise activities. Kids will gain both confidence and an understanding of the visual arts while building painting\, drawing\, sculpture and mixed-media skills. \nBefore the session begins\, each student will receive an art box with all the supplies needed for the session. During each weekly class\, Museum Educator Mikhayla Harrell will be live on Zoom to guide kids through deep art observation\, critical thinking\, art making procedures and mindfulness practices. \nAll students will create an amazing portfolio of artwork which they will be proud to share at home and in an online exhibition presented at the end of the session. DESCRIPTION:Kick off the new year with a dedicated monthly contemplation practice with Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, every fourth Thursday of the month!  \nOn Thursday\, January 28\, 2021 from 12-12:30 p.m.\, enjoy a “lunch break” mindfulness meditation looking at the work\, “Tzitzit (Threads)\,” by Hannah Altman from the PhotoNOLA CURRENTS 2020 exhibition. \nRegister\nHannah Altman\, Tzitzit (Threads)\, 2019\, Archival pigment print\, Courtesy of the artist \nEach session begins with a 5 minute introduction\, 5 minute viewing and discussion of an artwork and a 15 minute guided meditation\, culminating with 5 minutes for final sharing and closing. No previous experience with meditation is required. Mindfulness meditation is a technique of concentration and stillness that is scientifically proven to reduce stress\, anxiety and depression. It has been used for thousands of years to provide clarity and insight. More recently\, it has been embraced worldwide as a tool for developing parasympathetic nervous system responses to stress. We are honored to offer this technique in concert with the magnificent artwork at Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, to mindfully elevate our quotidian lives with joy\, peace and serenity.
