SUMMARY:Curated Conversation with Ed Williford
DESCRIPTION:Join Curator of the Collection\, Bradley Sumrall\, and Entwined artist\, Ed Williford\, for a Curated Conversation touching on Williford’s process in creating abstract sculptures from non-traditional everyday materials. \nWatch on the O Blog\nBorn in 1963\, Ed Williford was raised in Jackson\, Mississippi\, and currently lives and works in Brookhaven\, Mississippi. After studying art\, philosophy and architecture at Mississippi State University and Ole Miss\, Williford moved to a rural farmhouse in Magnolia\, Mississippi in his mid-thirties. On the farm\, Williford created an existence for himself that was filled with open time\, an existence that allowed him to begin a period of self-examination through art. \nWilliford creates abstract sculptures from non-traditional everyday materials. “I find my materials in thrift stores and hardware stores\,” he says. It is that alchemy of transforming common materials into mysterious and uncommon objects that drives his work. There exists in each object a tension between industrial mediums and organic forms\, between the common and the rarified\, between reality and fantasy. His palette is monotone\, mainly derived from oxidation and coffee. Much of his fabric is sourced from thrift-store drapes. Other materials include Elmer’s glue\, tape\, wire\, chicken feed sacks and loofah. \nWilliford arrived at his practice intuitively\, following his own interest in the everyday materials in his life. It shares many of the hallmarks of the Arte Povera movement in 1960s Italy. Through the use of simple materials and forms\, the everyday becomes meaningful and the hierarchies of “art” and common objects are broken down. Ultimately\, though\, the work of Ed Williford is the expression of one man’s exploration of the material culture around him. He is following his imagination and his hands\, finding his place in the world through the ritual of repetitive handwork – wrapping\, binding and twisting the common towards something transcendent. \n

This upcoming Curated Conversation will feature Richard McCabe\, Curator of Photography\, and Trenity Thomas\, a New Orleans photographer included in the O What a Night! silent auction and Louisiana Contemporary\, presented by The Helis Foundation. Trenity Thomas is also a Gallery Assistant at Ogden Museum and a former Teen Docent! \nWatch the Curated Conversation at noon on Thursday\, Oct. 15 on the O Blog. \nBid on Second Line Sunday in the silent auction! \nTrenity Thomas\, Second Line Sunday\, 2017\, Digital print\, Courtesy of the artist \nView Silent Auction\nARTIST BIO \nTrenity Thomas is a self-taught photographer who has also experimented with painting and sketching since grade school. As a photographer\, he has worked in a myriad of genres including fashion\, lifestyle\, editorial\, conceptual\, sports\, portraiture and nightlife photography. As a photographer\, Trenity uses his camera to capture the life and composition of still life around him. His photographs have a warmth to them that pulls the viewer into the scene as if they were present – a feature that has become characteristic of his photographic style. Trenity has been in various juried exhibitions\, which includes JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY’s 24th Annual NO DEAD ARTISTS International Juried Exhibition of Contemporary Art and the Louisiana Contemporary juried exhibition\, presented by The Helis Foundation at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans\, Louisiana. His photographs have also received international attention when they were chosen for exhibition in photovogue\, a prestigious collection of photographs curated by the Photo Editors of Vogue Italia.

His work has been published in magazines such as Abitare\, Archetype\, Black & White\, Harper’s\, Louisiana Cultural Vistas (now 64 Parishes)\, Photographer’s Forum\, and View Camera. His most recent book\, Enigmatic Stream: Industrial Landscapes of the Lower Mississippi River\, was published in September of 2019 by The Historic New Orleans Collection\, and is the 14th book he has authored\, co-authored\, or photographed. Creole World: Photographs of New Orleans and the Latin Caribbean Sphere\, was also published by The Historic New Orleans Collection in 2014. Previously published titles include a monograph Terra Incognita: Photographs of America’s Third Coast\, published by Chronicle Books\, San Francisco\, in 2007. Chronicle Books also published the best selling New Orleans: Elegance and Decadence in 1993 and Vestiges of Grandeur: The Plantations of Louisiana’s River Road in 1999. New Roads and Old Rivers: Louisiana’s Historic Pointe Coupee Parish was published by LSU Press in 2012. A complete publishing history for Richard Sexton can be viewed here. \nIn 1997 Sexton curated the exhibit Sidney Bechet: A World of Jazz 1897-1997\, which commemorated the hundredth anniversary of the influential jazz musician’s birth. Sexton has had two major exhibitions at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans. The first exhibit in 2005 featured work from his self-published\, handmade art book\, The Highway of Temptation and Redemption: A Gothic Travelogue in Two Dimensions. The second exhibit in 2007 featured work from Terra Incognita. This exhibit has subsequently traveled to the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs\, Mississippi\, the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland\, Florida\, the Pensacola Museum of Art in Pensacola\, Florida\, and the Southeast Museum of Photography in Daytona Beach\, Florida. Creole World\, his first exhibit for The Historic New Orleans Collection\, was on view at the Laura Simon Nelson Galleries for Louisiana Art from April 15\, through December 7\, 2014. It’s first travel venue was Frost Art Museum at Florida International University in Miami in 2015\, and in 2016 it traveled to Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College in Shreveport\, LA\, and then to the Hilliard University Art Museum in Lafayette\, LA. Enigmatic Stream was on view at the Historic New Orleans Collection from September 17\, 2019\, to April 5\, 2020. \nSexton’s photographs are included in the holdings of The Historic New Orleans Collection\, New Orleans Museum of Art\, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, LSU Museum of Art\, Louisiana State Museum\, Polk Museum of Art\, Frost Art Museum\, Pensacola Museum of Art\, Southeast Museum of Photography\, Hilliard University Art Museum\, Hunter Museum of Art\, Princeton University Art Museum\, and numerous private collections. In 2014 Richard Sexton received the Michael P. Smith Award for Documentary Photography from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. Also in 2014\, Richard Sexton was included in the American Illustrator-American Photographer Latin American Fotografia 3 Awards Annual.
