SUMMARY:Curated Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation in the galleries of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art with Level Artist Collective member John Isiah Walton. This event is free and open to the public. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nABOUT JOHN ISIAH WALTON \nJohn Isiah Walton is a painter born in 1985 in New Orleans\, where he continues to live and work. He attended St. Augustine High School (1999-2002) and graduated from Sarah T. Reed High School (2003). He received an associate of arts degree in 2012 from Delgado Community College\, New Orleans. \nWalton has been a member of Second Story Gallery (2012-13) and The Front\, New Orleans (2014 – 2017). He is a founding member of Level Artist Collective (2015 – present). He has lectured about his work for the graduate program at UNC\, Chapel Hill (2014). His work is held in the permanent collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art. In 2019\, he was included in the Atlanta Biennial at Atlanta Contemporary\, and he was also the subject of a solo exhibition\, Humidity\, at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi\, Mississippi. \nThe paintings of John Isiah Walton are executed with expressive and frenetic brush strokes\, creating surfaces filled with an energy and motion that seems to pulsate with the rhythms of contemporary New Orleans music and dance. While building upon the work of the Neo-Expressionists\, his narratives\, mark-making and visual aesthetic also reference contemporary urban street art and Social Expressionism. In his most recent paintings – included in the Level Artist Collective exhibition currently on view at the Ogden Museum – Walton explores issues of race\, identity\, popular culture and current events with both informed understanding and irreverent wit.

SUMMARY:The Swinging Gypsies
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\n\nThe New Orleans Swinging Gypsies embody the spirit of the classic jazz era\, swinging hard and evolving swing music into a form of futuristic punk rock jazz. \nThere is no doubt\, this fiery bunch has a strong voice in New Orleans. NOCCA graduate and New Orleans native\, John Saavedra founded this band in 2014. They play at several venues around the city\, estimating about 35 gigs a month; the Swinging Gypsies have been featured on ESPN Monday night football\, NCIS\, WWOZ\, Offbeat Magazine\, WWLTv channel 4 news\, French Quarter Festival\, Gretna Festival\, Hey Mister Jesse! podcast based in San Francisco and Rochester NY WGMC Jazz.  Their latest album “Hot Boudin\,” was produced by Randy Crafton\, a prominent engineer based in New York City\, who’s worked with legends Aretha Franklin and the Mingus Big Band. The Swinging Gypsies also have a following in San Diego\, touring twice a year and now expanding their travels to the east coast and abroad. \n\n\n\nThis new age bopping band pushes the limits of jazz into their own fusion of unique sounds that swing with a passionate flare. John (guitar/vocals) along with Giselle (vocals/dance) provide an atmosphere that is both enticing and joyful for all who experience their music.

SUMMARY:Curated Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation in the galleries of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art with artist Ron Bechet as he discusses the Museum’s latest exhibition\, What Music is Within: Black Abstraction from the Permanent Collection. This event is free and open to the public. \nABOUT RON BECHET \nRon Bechet\, is a native of New Orleans and lives in the city of his birth. He studied art at the University of New Orleans where he earned a B.A. degree\, and went on to earn an M.F.A. degree from Yale University. Since then he has exhibited his work nationally and internationally. He is known for intimate drawings and paintings inspired by the land and circumstances of Southern Louisiana\, knotted and matted and within African Diaspora tradition of trees connecting earth and sky\, the realms of the ancestors and the living. They tell a personal and communal metaphoric story of cultural hybridity. He is currently the Victor H. Labat Professor of Art at Xavier University of Louisiana and has been teaching for over twenty years. He currently serves on the Board of the Joan Mitchell Foundation\, Antenna Works and Ogden Museum of Southern Art. He has served as the first director of Xavier Art Department’s Community Arts Partnership Program and served in many arts and youth programs in the New Orleans area both as an advisor and a practitioner.

SUMMARY:Zane Forshee
DESCRIPTION:Admission is 2 for 1 tonight\, in celebration of Valentine’s Day! Purchase one ticket online and redeem your complimentary ticket at the door. This discount is also valid when you purchase your ticket at the door. Make a date to Hear the South! \nPurchase Tickets\nDescribed as “…one of his generation’s finest guitarists (Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine)\, Zane Forshee seamlessly bridges the traditions of the past with works of living composers to engage and challenge audiences. With accolades such as the Top Prize in the Montpelier Artist Recital Competition and the First Prize in the National Guitar Workshop International Solo Guitar Competition\, among others\, Zane’s dynamic programming and presence has led to appearances worldwide\, including the Palacete de Amezúa (Madrid)\, the Joseph Joachim Konzertsaal (Berlin)\, the Library of Congress (Washington\, D.C.)\, the New York City Classical Guitar Society\, and the Chimei Museum (Taiwan). \nZane’s most recent project\, the Laptop Tour\, furthers his mission of musical exploration by pushing the conceptual boundaries of the classical concert. Together with a laptop\, cameras\, microphones and the Internet\, Zane broadcasts programs that reflect the connections found between pieces\, composers and nontraditional spaces. The musical terrain is wide open for Zane as he continues to experiment with what’s possible both for himself\, the guitar and audiences in the 21st century. \nHighlights of the 2019-20 season include a tour of the South including engagements at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts and New Orleans’ Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, and a tour of the West Coast including collaborations with the Friction Quartet and solo engagements in Portland and the Bay Area at Old First Concerts and San Francisco Conservatory. In January\, Sony releases Zane‘s second full-length album\, recorded in Berlin\, on the Artist’s Recording Collective (ARC) label. Tracing the evolution of 20th Century Valencian composers\, this recording draws upon Zane’s extensive original research gathered while living in Spain as a Fulbright Grant Recipient. \nZane serves on the guitar faculty of the Peabody Conservatory of Music of the Johns Hopkins University and directs its LAUNCHPad Career Services office. He is also Chair of the Guitar and Harp department of the Peabody Institute’s Preparatory Division. Additionally\, Zane directs Peabody’s annual Fret Fest\, Summer Guitar Institute and was most recently awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award for his work within the Preparatory. “As the old adage goes\, those who cannot do\, teach. Apparently\, Zane Forshee didn’t get the memo…do not miss out on the chance to learn a thing or two from the man who makes music his life in the classroom and on stage.” (Baltimore City Paper) \nZane Forshee is a D’Addario Artist and plays on D’Addario strings.
