SUMMARY:Roland Guerin
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\nWith a new band and a new project entitled Grass Roots\, New Orleans based producer\, singer-songwriter-bassist Roland Guerin is starting a new musical chapter. Drawing from a wide spectrum of genres\, including American folk\, blues\, zydeco\, rock and jazz\, Guerin creates a singular style at the heart of which are stories told through multi-layered melodies\, rhythms and expressive lyrics in the range of Steely Dan\, John Mayer\, Sting and Peter Gabriel. \nRaised in a musical family – his father was a great lover of jazz and classical music\, his mother\, a blues and zydeco bass player – Guerin began playing bass at the age of 11. Throughout his formative years\, Guerin was strongly influenced by pop\, rock and R&B music of the 70’s and 80’s. Bands and artists such as Cameo\, Dazz Band\, Rush\, the Brothers Johnson\, Gerry Rafferty\, America\, and Booker T & The MG’s seeded his love for great songs and inspired him to write music of his own. \nWhile studying Marketing at Southern University in Baton Rouge\, Guerin joined legendary jazz educator Alvin Batiste’s Band\, The Jazztronauts. Having inherited much of Batiste’s musical innovations and concepts\, Guerin developed ways to bring his own musical voice to life. The jazz genre became his avenue toward success. Over the course of his career\, Guerin toured and performed with numerous legendary musicians\, such as George Benson\, Jimmy Scott\, Frank Morgan\, Vernel Fournier\, Gerry Mulligan\, Allen Toussaint\, John Scofield\, Mark Whitfield\, Ellis Marsalis\, and Marcus Roberts. He also participated in the recording of numerous albums\, including the Blind Boys of Alabama’s Grammy Award winning album Down in New Orleans\, Marcus Roberts’s Grammy Award nominated recording of George Gershwin’s classic Rhapsody in Blue\, and Allen Toussaint’s album Connected. \nAs a member of the Marcus Roberts Trio from 1994 to 2009\, Guerin performed at the head of symphony orchestras across the world\, among which the Berlin Philharmonic\, the Boston Symphony\, the Chicago Symphony\, and Seiji Ozawa’s New Japan Philharmonic. From his collaboration with Ozawa and Roberts\, Guerin developed a deeper understanding and appreciation of orchestration and arrangement\, both of which carry great importance in his own musical composition. \nIn 1998\, Guerin released his first album\, The Winds of the New Land\, featuring Peter Martin on piano\, Nicholas Payton on trumpet\, Donald Edwards on drums\, and Mark Whitfield on guitar. The record was acclaimed for its innovative style of composition and arrangement. JazzReview called it “a literal piece of art”\, while the New Orleans Magazine named Guerin a Contemporary Jazz All-Star. He followed up with an album from the Roland Guerin Sextet\, Live at the Blue Note\, released by Half Note Records\, and released 4 more successful albums in the following decade. \nGuerin joined the Allen Toussaint Band in 2008\, touring and performing with Toussaint until his passing in 2015. During the time with Toussaint\, Guerin found his way back to his musical roots. Integrating American folk melodies\, blues\, zydeco\, African rhythms\, and rock with jazz soloing and orchestral arrangements\, Guerin creates an entirely new and singular musical experience. Shortly afterwards Guerin was asked to join the band of legendary Dr John and soon after to become his last Musical Director. \nIn August 2016\, Guerin released a single entitled Black Coffee. His new album GRASS ROOTS was released on October 18th 2019. STICK TO THE BASICS is the first single on GRASS ROOTS with the release date being April 26th 2019 worldwide.

SUMMARY:Curated Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the third in a series of conversations in the galleries of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art with members of Level Artist Collective. The conversation on January 7 will feature Rontherin Ratliff. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nCurated Conversation: Horton Humble Curated Conversations: Carl Joe Williams \nABOUT RONTHERIN RATLIFF \nRontherin Ratliff was born in New Orleans\, where he currently lives and works. He is a self-taught artist whose work explores architecture as analogous to the human conditions. \nIn 2009\, Rontherin Ratliff led the artistic direction and co-creation of the set installation for the Works and Process production of Peter and the Wolf at the Guggenheim NYC. In 2010\, with support from the Joan Mitchell Foundation and the Contemporary Arts Center\, he was commissioned to create Sounds of a Crescent City\, a large-scale sculpture for Habitat for Humanity’s Musicians’ Village in New Orleans. That same year\, he was invited to exhibit Things That Float at Diverse Works in Texas. In 2012\, he was awarded a Percent For Art grant by the Arts Council of New Orleans to create Way Down Yonder in New Orleans\, a site-specific public art sculpture at The New Orleans Mayer Branch Library.  In the same year\, he was selected to exhibit Revolve\, a large-scale sculptural installation at the Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans.   In 2014\, he was invited to participate in the 7th Annual Governors Island Art Fair to install Mud Room\, a site-specific installation.  He was a 2014 recipient of the Joan Mitchell Center Artist-In-Residence Program in New Orleans\, which led to his series\, Counterbalance\, later exhibited at the Contemporary Arts Center\, New Orleans. Also in 2014\, he was selected as one of the collaborating artists for the nationally acclaimed New Orleans Street Art installation\, ExhibitBe\, where he created the site-specific installation Hanging in the Balance and Storm Clouds. In 2015\, the Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator and NPN/VAN awarded him with an artist residency in Miami\, Florida. While in residency\, he started on his series\, Can’t Call Home. Currently\, Rontherin Ratliff is expanding this series. \nThe Can’t Call Home series is an attempt to explore what Ratliff understands to be home\, the mental and physical space. It is the result of his investigation of connections and communication\, love and loss\, nostalgia and yearning\, irrecoverable conditions and acceptance\, and an overall expression of optimism. The themes of this series encouraged him to look at past periods in his life that brought back memories and emotions he was not quite sure how to manage. His understanding of that place called home is not a closed structure with a roof overhead but instead: space in time. His experience of home has been lived in moments that offered a sense of familiarity\, comfort and security. Through consideration of what it means to be beyond these established moments of significance\, he is exploring the loss of a period in time and the absence of familiar feelings derived from loved ones. \n/// Photo courtesy of Joshua Huval

SUMMARY:Teacher Night
DESCRIPTION:This free evening for area educators will include a guided tour and art activity\, plus lesson plans\, resources and ideas to help incorporate works of art into your curriculum. Teacher Night is free\, but registration is required.  \nRegister\nAbout the Ogden After Hours Performers \nOpéra Nouvelle is a concept that was derived from the French spelling of opera (Opéra) plus the word “Nouvelle” from Nouvelle Orleans. The first Opéra Nouvelle concerts were presented in Fall\, 2017\, in conjunction with the New Orleans Opera productions of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci and they were hosted by the Jewish Community Center as well as NOCCA.  In the beginning\, the programs had lecture and performance components\, and featured three solo singers and a pianist. Since that time\, Opéra Nouvelle morphed into a multimedia performing group\, and it regularly features six to eight singers\, two to three dancers\, poets\, one or two collaborative pianists and the concerts are usually presented at venues that allow opportunities for us to incorporate visual arts\, regional architecture and sculptures to connect large\, overriding themes. Opéra Nouvelle has performed at a variety of venues\, including Temple Sinai\, Lusher Theatre\, Deutsches Haus\, NOMA\, Xavier University and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. \nThe theme of the Ogden After Hours performance is Joan of Arc and women throughout the ages who were heroic\, brash\, brilliant and out of sync with their respective historical epochs. Opéra Nouvelle will not only feature historical figures such as Queen Elizabeth and Anne Boleyn\, but also important literary figures such as Violetta Valery\, Giuseppe Verdi’s grand realization of The Lady of the Camellias (La Dame aux Camélias) by Alexandre Dumas the Younger. \n
