SUMMARY:Curated Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second in a series of conversations in the galleries of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art with members of Level Artist Collective. The conversation on December 10 will feature Carl Joe Williams. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nCurated Conversation: Horton Humble Curated Conversation: Rontherin Ratliff \nABOUT CARL JOE WILLIAMS  \nCarl Joe Williams is a contemporary African American artist known for his multimedia paintings\, sculpture\, installations and interdisciplinary works. Williams creates paintings and painted sculpture from found objects. \nHe describes his works as “symphonies of colors” that present a powerful visual experience. Williams’ installation\, Journeys\, was featured at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta\, GA in 2002. And his Sculptural Trees public art installation in Metairie\, Louisiana was described as reminiscent of “lollipops in a Candyland forest\,” with their custom acrylic light boxes attached to crepe myrtles. \nWilliams is one of the founders of Blights Out\, a Creative Capital supported project in New Orleans along with artists Lisa Sigal and Imani Jacqueline Brown. Blights Out is a community and artist led initiative to activate agency in neighborhood development. This initiative was initiated as part of Prospect New Orleans\, the largest biennial of international contemporary art in the U.S. \nWilliams’ visual interpretations are enhanced by his vision of art and music as extensions of one another. An accomplished musician as well as a visual artist\, Williams incorporates his musical compositions into videos and installations. Found objects play an important role in Williams’ works by becoming elements of a narrative continuum that address societal and historical concerns. \nWilliams attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Art where he received formal training. He continued his studies at Atlanta College of Art earning his BFA and is a founding member of Level Artist Collective\, which includes artists Ana Hernandez\, Horton Humble\, Rontherin Ratliff and John Isiah Walton. \nWilliams has had a variety of exhibitions including shows at the George Ohr-O’Keefe Museum Of Art in Biloxi\, Mississippi; Crystal Bridges in Bentonville\, Arkansas; Convergence: JMC@P3 Exhibition\, held in conjunction with Prospect 3 New Orleans\, Curated by Deborah Willis and Sponsored by the Joan Mitchell Center; New Orleans Museum of Art;  McKenna Museum of African American Art and Hammonds House Galleries\, Atlanta\, GA. Williams has public art installations in Atlanta at Sweet Auburn Curb Market (as part of 1996 Summer Olympics) and at the Washington Park Tennis Center. In 2013 he was a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Center NOLA Studio Artist Residence Program. His work is included in the Crystal Bridges Collection. \n/// Photo courtesy of Carl Joe Williams

SUMMARY:Extended
DESCRIPTION:The Ogden Museum is proud to be a drop-off site for the Toys for Tots program! Donate a new toy valued at $10 or more when you attend OAH on Dec. 12 and receive free admission for one!  \nHarbinger is the debut Origin release from Extended\, one of New Orleans’ brightest rising star ensembles. This sophomore outing improves upon the solid foundation set with 2016’s eponymous debut\, exhibiting a new attitude and focused maturity after three years of development. \nThe 10 original compositions found here are penned equally by all three members of the band\, and they each present a unique\, deeply contemporary approach to composing for the piano trio setting. Drummer Brad Webb’s rock-tinged melodies collide with pianist Oscar Rossignoli’s dense nearly-classical harmonic approach\, while bassist Matt Booth’s impulse towards the avant-garde centers the three\, keeping them from sliding too far to any extreme. \nFrom this metered approach towards writing and playing\, Extended is able to achieve their goal of making creative\, highly improvisational music that is as “boxless” as possible — they aren’t trying to do anything other than honestly interpret the unique world of each piece. The beauty and the risk with Extended is that each world can shift from performance to performance\, and they’ve had to learn to take comfort in not knowing how it’s all going to go once they step on stage. What they’ve captured on this recording\, then\, is three singular musical identities coming together in ego-less\, democratic service to collective creation. \nYou can find them at: \nextendedtrio.com \ninstagram.com/extendedtrio \nfacebook.com/extendedtrio \nPurchase Tickets\n

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join Ogden Museum Curator of Photography\, Richard McCabe\, for a discussion on the Ogden Museum’s current exhibition\, Memory is a Strange Bell: The Art of William Christenberry. McCabe will walk you through the exhibition galleries\, speak about the career of artist William Christenberry and answer questions. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nAbout the Exhibition\nPerhaps no other artist in the American South engaged more deeply and consistently with the concepts of time\, place and memory through their work than William Christenberry. Although widely known as a pioneering master of color photography as an art form\, Christenberry was a multifaceted artist – utilizing painting\, drawing\, photography\, sculpture\, found object assemblage\, and installations to weave a deeply personal narrative with universal relevance. Memory is a Strange Bell: The Art of William Christenberry draws inspiration from a line of Emily Dickinson – often quoted by Mr. Christenberry – to explore the role of remembrance and the passage of time in the artist’s work. \n/// House and Car\, Near Akron (detail)\, 1978 © 1978 William Christenberry \n

SUMMARY:Mike Doussan
DESCRIPTION:Mike Doussan\, a New Orleans native\, started playing guitar at the age of eight and made his way into the New Orleans club scenes in 2004 at the age of 24. With guitar in hand he walked into different clubs with the intent of playing a couple of tunes with whomever was on stage. He then became a regular at The Apple Barrel playing blues with Mike Hood and the Frenchmen St. Delegation\, at Banks St. Bar playing funk with New Orleans Juice and anywhere Eric Lindell was taking stage with his blue-eyed soul ensemble. It wasn’t long before he fronted his own band\, West Bank Mike and the Fisher Project. Rooted in New Orleans funk and blues\, the Fisher Project would go on to win Best Blues Band at the 2006 Sonny Boy Blues Society’s “Battle of the Bands.” \n“Muse in the Kitchen\,” Doussan’s first album was recorded at Word Of Mouth Studios in historic Algiers Point in 2005. The last note being recorded just two days before Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. Luckily\, the music was saved and the album was released in 2006. \nDoussan then recorded “Sin or Salvation” at the Living Room Studio on the New Orleans West Bank. Each track draws on varying influences of rock\, funk\, country\, but all comes together to be an unmistakingly New Orleans sound. Five weeks before its release in March 2014 the Doussan family experienced a tragedy that fundamentally changed Mike’s perspective. His brother\, Brett Doussan\, died by suicide. The song “Spend the Night” was co-written by Mike and Brett along with Dave Jordan and the late Jamie Galloway. \nFollowing the release of “Sin Or Salvation” and the untimely death of his brother\, Doussan joined Dave Jordan and the NIA full time as lead guitarist.  During his tenure with the NIA\, Doussan played a central role in the writing and recording of the NIA’s 2016 release\, “No Losers Tonight.”  After 4+ years of touring and recording with the NIA\, Doussan decided it was time to move on and revisit his own writing and solo career. \nIn August 2017\, Mike Doussan teamed up with Roxy Bergeron of CSB Roxy Music and Bassist/Producer Charlie Wooton to record a collection of all new original songs that were recorded in Music Shed Studios in the Lower Garden District of New Orleans. Grammy-winning engineer Eric Heigle (Arcade Fire\, Lost Bayou Ramblers) was then brought in to mix the record along with Grammy-nominated engineer Pete Lyman (Brandi Carlile\, Jason Isbell\, John Prine) for the final task of mastering at Infrasonic Sound in Nashville.  “Yesterday’s Troubles” was released May 2019. \nOver the past five years since his brother’s death\, Doussan has been working in advocacy and fundraising for both suicide prevention and mental health awareness. His mother\, Lisa\, along with friends and family\, started up a non-profit called the Brett Thomas Doussan Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to raise mental health awareness through advocacy\, education\, and music. Doussan also serves on the executive board of Upturn Arts as Vice President.  Upturn Arts provides arts education that is accessible to children of all socioeconomic backgrounds in the New Orleans area. \nMike is married to his wife of nine years\, Maggie\, and he has three children. They reside in New Orleans. \nPurchase Tickets
