SUMMARY:Museum Store Pop-Up Opening
DESCRIPTION:“I identify as an artist of the Anthropocene. I make sgraffito carved ceramics in reverence to and wonder of the natural systems presently collapsing due to climate crisis. Immersing myself in research for a piece is a way for me to connect with the biophilia that is inherent to our own human species. In the imagined wilderness of the Gulf South\, I connect to the ancient parts of my brain’s evolution that associates beauty\, belonging and worship with the flora and fauna that compose our habitat. I strive to inspire my audience to remember those connections in the depths of their own minds – to remember the intrinsic relationship with nature that our species’ survival depends on.” – Abbey Kuhe \nAbbey’s work will be available for purchase in the Museum Store through November 30.

SUMMARY:Keith Burnstein's Kettle Black
DESCRIPTION:Keith Burnstein is a New Orleans based singer-songwriter\, pianist and film composer who pens timeless tunes to live by. His is a new American songbook\, one that draws as much from Tin Pan Alley as it does from modern geniuses like Jeff Tweedy\, Dr. John and Amon Tobin. “The songs\, while instantly familiar\, remain very much their own creations” (“Secret Sound Shop”)\,  “combining the bedroom intimacy of a singer-songwriter” (“Seven Days VT:) with the rich harmonic palette of jazz\, contemporary classical and “world” musics. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOriginally a resident of NYC\, Burnstein discovered and fell in love with New Orleans while touring with his former band\, The Mumbles\, in late 2009. Keith picked up camp a few months later\, and hit the ground running. Since the move\, he has toured with funk legends\, The Headhunters\, Louisiana songwriter\, Kristin Diable\, and released three records as a leader. He also scored the Emmy winning documentary\, Momentum Generation\, as well as the ABC series\, The Last Defense\, and has had music featured on the NPR series\, Tripod. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nKeith’s latest singer-songwriter project\, Kettle Black\, is a double percussion discussion that fans out the African and Cuban influences found in New Orleans music to create an entirely new pocket for his tunes. The group features Luke Quaranta from Toubab Krewe on percussion\, Raja Kassis from Antibalas on guitar\, and master drummer Michael Skinkus\, who has worked extensively with Dr John and The Radiators. Kettle Black just released a live record\, “4.28.16.\,” and are hard at work on a new studio album\, entitled “Things That Are Heavy Make Me Feel Light\,” slated for release in March 2020. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Rod Picott
DESCRIPTION:July 19\, 2019 found Rod Picott releasing his eleventh album\, titled “Tell The Truth & Shame The Devil.” The new album is completely acoustic\, featuring only guitar\, harmonica and Picott’s weathered vocals. Many of the songs on “Tell The Truth & Shame The Devil” are influenced by a health scare that Picott endured in the winter of 2018. The condition was hunted down and solved but the weeks long incident of a freight train running through his chest played a profound role in the writing and recording of the album. \nAlone with his modest recording gear\, Picott set about making an album as honest\, raw and uncontrived as his spine would allow. Already known for the intimacy and vivid narratives of his previous work\, “Tell The Truth & Shame The Devil” opens the door wider still. The songs are confessional and honest. The recording itself is unpolished and raw. “Tell The Truth & Shame The Devil” takes a small turn away from the blue collar anthems he’s been lauded for and finds Picott exploring his own inner life with the same deft and revealing hand he’s honed over the last nineteen years. Rod Picott’s health is now in check. \nNow in his fifties\, Rod Picott has garnered a loyal cult audience across the U.S. and Europe. He tours tirelessly and continues to garner rave reviews for both his songwriting skills and darkly humorous\, compelling live show. \nA prolific writer\, Picott has recently turned his hand to poetry (God In His Slippers\, Murmmeration – Mezcalita Press) short fiction (Out Past The Wires – Working Title Farm) and has a novel in the works titled A Bony Right Fist. Born in the small mill town of South Berwick Maine and residing in Nashville TN since 1994\, “Tell The Truth & Shame The Devil” is the latest release from former construction worker Rod Picott. Tour dates can be viewed at www.rodpicott.com. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Artist Workshop: Exploring Level Artist Collective
DESCRIPTION:Several of the artists in Level Artist Collective incorporate installation as a means to express their vision of “home.” Installation refers to immersive\, three-dimensional works that often are site-specific and designed to transform the perception of a space. This workshop will give you the resources to design and implement your own small installation sourced from drawing\, painting\, photography\, collage and found-object sculptures. The workshop will begin with a visual assessment of the artworks and a guided meditation led by Museum Educator Mikhayla Anderson. Next\, using a multi-media approach\, participants will explore the concept of “home” and construct a temporary installation work of art examining that concept. As always\, materials are provided but feel free to bring source materials or supplies that might enhance your creative narrative. \nMaterials provided\nFor adults 18 and up\n$40 member; $45 non-member\nAdvance Registration Required \nRegister\nImage: Ana Hernandez\, Those who dwell in the Waters (detail)\, 2019\, Acrylic\, house paint\, gel medium on canvas \n
