SUMMARY:Kristin Diable
DESCRIPTION:When we called it the American Dream\, what we really meant was “the American Myth.” \nThat myth convinced us that the right house/car/bank account/voting card could punch our tickets to a happily-ever-after\, but for reasons too numerous and depressing to note\, that myth is finally dying. Somewhere along the way\, we realized the secret to mythology is not letting anyone sell it to you. You have to create your own. And now something new is springing up as we cast off the strange rules and crushing expectations of old. We’re rediscovering that freedom comes from the inside out\, not from the outside in. \nKristin Diable has been exploring freedom and choice in her music ever since she picked up an open mic at a lounge in Baton Rouge and stunned the audience into silence. She rode that vibe\, away to New York and then back to her native Louisiana like a storm front\, one that shook New Orleans and cooled the air. And her newest album\, Create Your Own Mythology\, invokes her Louisiana and Americana roots\, while firing a rock-and-roll shot across the bow of borrowed myths. \nProducer Dave Cobb expands upon a stellar year that had seen Sturgill Simpson’s Metamodern Sounds in Country Music\, Lindi Ortega’s Tin Star and Jason Isbell’s Southeastern all arrive to critical acclaim–here he does double duty\, producing and also standing the front lines on guitar. Cobb is known for spurring his performers to find their truest voices\, and this is Diable’s richest and most elaborate album to date. \nIt takes a person to write an album\, but a good album writes a person too. Kristin realized Create Your Own Mythology was fighting its way into the world during her force-of-will tour\, which alighted in Europe and Africa in 2013. Cut loose from the norm\, discovering new venues almost as fast as she could perform in them\, she found swimming in her head new songs about holding on\, letting go\, patience and faith in the face of futility. And about penning your own rules and your own reality. \nFrom the gospel notes of “True Devotion”\, written in Morocco during a Ramadan sunset\, to the wistful universal waters flowing through “Deepest Blue”\, Diable weaves a dense\, bewitching net. The idea of embracing the infinite unknown and finding freedom\, clarity through the trials we experience along our journey as human beings is explored in songs like the lead single\, “I’ll Make Time for You”\, and “Eyes to the Horizon”. The latter has been used twice in HBO’s Treme performed by the character\, Annie. \nRumi wrote\, “Where did I come from\, and what am I supposed to be doing? I have no idea. My soul is from elsewhere\, I’m sure of that\, and I intend to end up there.” \nKristin says that music is her ticket on that journey to the soul’s distant elsewhere\, and this new album is her invitation to the listener–not to follow her on her mythical path\, but to go questing for their own. That’s a journey that will require some suffering\, and acceptance\, and evolution and honesty–these are the tokens hidden in these songs\, smoothing that hard path\, leading us away\, and leading us home. \nThe Mississippi River makes a hairpin turn in Baton Rouge before swerving unstoppably into the Gulf of Mexico. As it slowly zigs and zags like a cautious alcoholic\, rich sediment sloshes loose onto the sun-baked Louisiana turf. It’s lush country. Things grow here. New Orleans grew here. Kristin Diable grew here and is still growing. And myths grow here like sugarcane does: fast\, tall and sweet. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Soul Brass Band
DESCRIPTION:Soul Brass Band brings the New Orleans party: known for its top-fight traditional brass band repertoire and second-line parades – night or day – Soul Brass Band’s unique signature of classic Soul infusion is unforgettable. The band’s deep academic musical roots underpin their brass band presentation – each musician is both a bandleader and highly-trained jazz musician. The result is a brass band that unleashes an utterly crisp and soulful sound. The birth of Soul Brass Band was by CeeLo Green’s request: bandleader Derrick Freeman quickly assembled the perfect group for CeeLo’s music video\, “Music to My Soul”. From that moment\, Soul Brass Band’s all-star lineup formed into one of New Orleans’ new favorite bands\, as well as at NN North Sea Jazz Festival\, Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival\, Spiagge Soul Festival\, Ascona\, Tel Aviv\, and more. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Curated Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first in a series of conversations in the galleries of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art with members of Level Artist Collective. The conversation on October 15 will feature Horton Humble. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nCurated Conversations: Carl Joe Williams Curated Conversation: Rontherin Ratliff \nABOUT HORTON HUMBLE \nBorn in New Orleans\, Horton Humble is a self-taught American painter. Humble’s debut show in 2007 entitled Debris\, was a series of paintings using wood from the Hurricane Katrina wreckage centered on themes of a lost city and water as a powerful force. In 2008\, he embarked on a one-year journey through Africa for his next series Transit Urban\, twelve paintings using local traditional fabrics depicting the energy of the people\, land and culture. Each piece was drafted on site and later accompanied him on his other travels from Europe to the US\, in cities like Chicago and Lisbon. Enchanted by the old and mestizo city\, he returned to Lisbon in 2012 where he lived for almost three years and created The Lisbon Series influenced by the discovery of a new medium; ceramics and its modeling techniques. After this productive period in Portugal\, Humble again returned home and established his studio with a group of fellow artists in New Orleans and co-founded the Level Artist Collective in 2015. \nIn 2017\, Horton Humble was a resident artist at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans and named “one of the most talented young painters producing in the South today” by Bradley Sumrall\, Curator of the Collection at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art (Curator’s Choice\, Country Roads Magazine). Through the summer he created his first public sculpture in steel – The Guardian\, commissioned by The Helis Foundation for the Poydras Corridor project – Sculpture for New Orleans. Currently\, Humble is creating his most ambitious work\, large scale canvases in which he is releasing the formality of his detail obsession into a more dynamic and expressive work. \nHorton Humble is a founding member of LEVEL Collective and a 2015/ 2017 nominee for the United States Artists Fellowship. His works are included in public and private collections\, showcased at the Poydras Corridor in New Orleans\, Prizm Art Fair- Art Basel Miami\, Atlanta Contemporary Biennial\, Ohr-O`Keefe Museum of Art- Biloxi\, Mississippi\, Luciano´s Benetton Imago Mundi Collection- Italy\, NOMA- Prospect 2 Satellite\, Carroll Gallery- Tulane University\, Antenna Gallery- New Orleans\, among others. \n/// Photo courtesy of Horton Humble \n

SUMMARY:Artist Workshop: Exploring Memory is a Strange Bell
DESCRIPTION:The work of William Christenberry spans from pioneering color photography\, abstract expressionist paintings\, sculptures and some lesser-known ink and pencil drawings. Using ink and large format paper\, Museum Educator Mikhayla Anderson will lead participants in an investigation of Christenberry’s abstract reflections of the gourd tree\, so prevalently displayed throughout Hale County. What do you notice in the Louisiana country-side? What objects call for your attention? What inspires you to abstraction? SUMMARY:Sleazeball Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Sorry\, but you’re about to be seduced by New Orleans lunatics – the Sleazeball Orchestra. The scandalous Fräulein Frances (Kitty Baudoin)\, South Louisiana born-and-bred\, fronts the band. After teething her fangs on the legs of local music legends\, she’s taken her show on the road since the 80s\, with long stayovers in California and Hawaii. She bewitches audiences with her lounge lizard style\, Yma Sumac vocal range and love of the Sleaze inside every jazz tune. New Orleans native\, bassist and musical director Stoo Odom (ex-Graves Brothers Deluxe\, Thin White Rope\, Subarachnoid Space) comes from an avant-psych rock world and inflicts his aesthetics onto Sleazeball jazz – after refining them in every dive from Hattiesburg to Osaka since 1991. Supported by the finest musicians in New Orleans\, they will help you get back in touch with the Sleaze inside jazz. There’s been nothing quite like it since Lee Dorsey founded New Orleans in 1718. Or something like that. \nWear your Halloween costume to the Ogden Museum on October 31 and receive a free admission pass for a future visit to the Museum or Ogden After Hours! Admission on this day is free for Louisiana residents from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.\, courtesy of The Helis Foundation Art for All program! \nPurchase Tickets
