DESCRIPTION:About Ben Redwine \nNew Orleans based clarinetist Ben Redwine feels equally comfortable playing Brahms or Ellington. He is devoted to the performance of new classical music and old jazz\, as well as to teaching the next generation of performers and teachers. \nBen served as an Assistant Professor at The Catholic University of America in Washington\, DC from 2012-2016 and was woodwind professor at Southern University in Baton Rouge\, Louisiana from 2017-2019. In 2014\, he retired after 27 years in then US military band system\, the majority of time serving as the e-flat clarinet soloist with the US Naval Academy Band in Annapolis\, Maryland. He has been a featured soloist at seven International Clarinet Association Clarinet Fests in the U.S. and Europe\, and has performed extensively as a freelance musician nationally and internationally. In 2016\, he moved to the New Orleans area to pursue performance opportunities in the birthplace of jazz. Since relocating to Louisiana\, he has been a regular performer with the Louisiana Philharmonic\, and Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestras. \nIn addition to leading his popular traditional-style jazz band\, the Redwine Jazz Band\, Ben is a Selmer Paris performing artist and a D’Addario performing artist\, presenting concerts and master classes internationally. He has recorded for Mapleshade\, Naxos\, Vin Rouge\, Big Kahuna\, and AmCam record labels\, and composed and performed new music for 1920s era silent films featuring actors Charley Chase and Harry Langdon\, released on DVD box sets by All Day Entertainment. All of Ben’s recordings can be found at his website\, redwinejazz.com. \nBen earned a bachelor of music education degree from the University of Oklahoma\, a master of music degree from Louisiana State University\, and a doctorate degree at The Catholic University of America\, studying clarinet performance with a minor in Latin American music history. He has studied with Loris Wiles\, David Etheridge\, Steve Girko\, Steve Cohen\, Ignatius Gennusa\, Ben Armato and Paul Cigan. \nFounder of the company RJ Music Group\, Ben manufactures quality products for discriminating musicians\, including Gennusa mouthpieces\, the Reed Wizard\, and other products and books by Ben Armato. \n\nBen lives on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain with his wife\, Leslie\, and their flock of chickens. \nAbout Don Vappie \nTo say that Don Vappie has had a busy musical career would be an understatement. He has several overlapping careers as a banjoist\, guitarist\, bassist\, singer\, arranger-composer\, educator\, lecturer\, record and event producer\, and expert not only about New Orleans jazz but its place and importance in the contemporary music scene.  \nBorn and raised in New Orleans\, he was surrounded by music growing up. Many of his relatives played music and his great uncle was Papa John Joseph who had played bass during the era of Buddy Bolden. A cousin gave Don piano lessons but he had a greater interest in playing bass. He played electric bass with a funk group from the age of 13\, taught himself guitar when a member of the band left\, and worked in Bourbon Street clubs as a teenager. After a few years he began playing bass with jazz trios including with such notables as Placide Adams\, Teddy Riley\, Wallace Davenport\, Bob French and Danny Barker\, and he taught himself banjo. While Don studied music theory and classical bass at Loyola University and Xavier University\, his main musical education took place on the bandstand.  \nHe made his recording debut as a leader in 1986\, started his own Vappielle label\, began yearly visits to Europe around that time\, and in 1990 recorded Crescent City Serenade with clarinetist Dr. Michael White. After meeting and impressing Wynton Marsalis\, Don began working regularly with the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra as a guitarist\, banjoist and vocalist in 1994\, an association that has continued for 25 years. While best known for his work in vintage New Orleans jazz\, Don Vappie has a versatile style on his instruments and has performed and recorded along the way with such notables as Peggy Lee\, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, Otis Taylor\, Bette Midler\, Ruby Braff\, Howard Alden\, Terence Blanchard\, Wycliffe Gordon\, Marcus Roberts\, Ellis Marsalis\, Doc Cheatham\, Benny Waters\, Bob Wilbur\, Dick Hyman\, Jon Faddis\, Diana Krall\, Eric Clapton\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Daryl Sherman and the New Orleans Orchestra among many others. He has  \nalso led eight albums of his own including with his Creole Jazz Serenaders\, a group that emphasizes superior obscurities from the 1920s.  \nDon Vappie has also been involved in many special projects. He starred in and co-produced the PBS documentary American Creole: New Orleans Reunion\, writing the music for that special and for Zora Neal Hurston – Jump At The Sun\, Mandeville: The Good Life\, The Homefront\, NCIS New Orleans and Treme. Don’s transcriptions of many early jazz recordings are available from Warner Bros. Publishing. He has done extensive research on the Creole music of New Orleans and the Caribbean\, and as a speaker has lectured about everything from the influences of early jazz to the history of the banjo. In addition\, he is a popular and prolific educator. Don is the jazz guitar instructor at Loyola University\, an instructor at the Don “Moose” Jamison Heritage School of Music\, works with many public schools\, teaches privately (guitar\, banjo\, bass and mandolin)\, conducts master classes\, clinics\, workshops and seminars\, and has presented many programs on New Orleans music for such organizations as Jazz At Lincoln Center\, Carnegie Hall\, Tulane University\, NPR\, and the Smithsonian. In the future\, he plans to offer online lessons.  \nDon Vappie is constantly creating music and spreading the gospel of New Orleans jazz. “Traditional New Orleans jazz is the foundation for all of the music that is around today. Although I’m best known for playing the older music\, I still play modern jazz too. The music all connects together. When I came up\, the older guys in New Orleans played everything. SUMMARY:Minos the Saint
DESCRIPTION:Minos the Saint is not what you would call a “traditional” southern Louisiana band. Though Baton Rouge is home\, the ensemble plays mostly original music\, with a variety of influences which yield experimental-yet-accessible original folk rock\, uniquely representing Louisiana and the world. Cajun and Zydeco roots are joined by Latin\, Jazz and Eastern European styles\, along with the group’s shared classical background. DESCRIPTION:Ego Non Karaoke \n“I don’t do karaoke” \nFor most artists\, an album of cover songs is an idea of last resort\, a Hail Mary pass when one’s creativity has stalled out or there’s a contract to be fulfilled…. \nBut most artists aren’t Judith Owen. This firebrand singer-songwriter and pianist is currently riding the wave of a tremendous couple of years. Her previous album Somebody’s Child was adored by critics around the world – The Sunday Times UK chose it as one of the best records of 2016 and Analog Planet said that it “sparkles with Owen’s witty energy” and noting that “the songs will stay with you long after the record ends.” Her live performances\, whether as a headliner or as the handpicked opening act for Bryan Ferry’s recent tours of Europe and North America\, have been wowing listeners and gaining fans like fellow artist Jackson Browne\, who said of Owen’s onstage prowess: “It’s a masterclass on how a show should be done.”  So with all that wind in her sails\, why then turn to the music of others for her forthcoming album redisCOVERed? For Owen\, it is something of a gift for her fans\, both old and new.  \n“Over the years\, so many people\, whether it be [film producer] Nick Wechsler or audience members who hear the covers I’ve done over the years\, have always had the question\, ‘Why don’t you make a collection of these things because they’re so unique and unusual?’” Owen says. “And I had to really ask myself why I do these covers and why they bring me so much pleasure.” Those questions are easy to answer once you listen to redisCOVERed. As she has done since her earliest days attempting to plunk out the music of Mozart and Debussy on her family’s piano to her days playing four hour sets in piano bars fulfilling customer requests\, Owen makes these songs her own. She molds the familiar melodies and lyrics to contemporary pop hits and longtime favorites to her unmistakable voice and style. “The line I always use is\, ‘I don’t do karaoke.’ I don’t perform or sing music unless it means something to me\,” Owen insists. “I knew I had to make these songs matter to me\, to have my truth in them.” It doesn’t take much digging to find the deeper layers of meaning in her song choices and her performances on redisCOVERed. Look within even the seemingly silliest selection and you’ll find a big piece of Owen’s heart waiting for you.  \nOwen’s arrangements breathe fresh life into these familiar songs recording with Grammy® winning co-producer/mixer/engineer David Bianco (Tom Petty\, Bob Dylan\, Meghan Trainor) whilst surrounding herself with some sharp musical talent. SUMMARY:Josh Hyde
DESCRIPTION:Born in Baton Rouge\, Josh Hyde was barely seven years old when his family moved to New Orleans for a time.  By that time\, he had also already written his first song. At 11 years old\, Hyde penned “Mississippi Bridge\,” a deeply personal highlight about riding the bus to visit his father every 2 weeks. As a teenager\, he became surrounded by “The Blues” in the Baton Rouge music scene.  Playing at Tabby’s Blues Box he got to meet The Neal Brothers\, Tabby Thomas\, and Silas Hogan. \nFast Forward to 2019…..The sweet spot of Josh Hyde’s latest release INTO THE SOUL is found in the perfectly imperfect yet entirely compelling approach to songs that range from the joyous blues-funk of the opening cut\, “Rocking Chair\,” to the dusky melancholy of the closing track\, “Reasons Why.” Tying everything together is Nashville producer Joe V. McMahan (Kevin Gordon\, Mike Farris)\, with whom the Louisiana native recorded his previous album\, 2017’s The Call of the Night\, which Sonny Landreth calls funky\, atmospheric and soulful. \nAdditional musicians on the new project include bassist Ron Eoff and pedal-steel guitar player Chris Lippincott\, but at the forefront is Hyde\, whose expressive vocals and wholly passionate nature come shining through track after track. If his role\, as he suggests\, is to get the songs on an album to behave together like a family\, with INTO THE SOUL he’s less a strict disciplinarian and more an affable big brother\, capable of showcasing his impressive musical aptitude but laid-back enough to let the songs speak for themselves. DESCRIPTION:Exhibiting artist Courtney Egan will conduct a gallery talk for Virtual Idylls\, an exhibition featuring her projection-based installations that weave botanical art with sculpture and technology. The gallery talk will be moderated by Ogden Museum Curator of Photography\, Richard McCabe. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \n\nABOUT COURTNEY EGAN \nCourtney Egan’s projection-based installations weave the tradition of botanical art with sculpture and technology. Strongly inspired by the profusion of native and non-native flora in New Orleans\, where she has lived and worked in since 1991\, her work digitally manipulates the natural world\, questioning how our perception of nature is augmented by technology. \nCourtney has displayed her work in solo shows at Arthur Roger Gallery in New Orleans\, Bradbury Museum of Art\, Louisiana Art and Science Museum\, Colorado State University Art Museum and University of Louisiana’s Hilliard Museum. Group and two-person shows include Digital Nature at the Los Angeles Arboretum\, Between Nature and Technology at the Sonoma Museum of Art\, Digital Graffiti in Alys Beach\, FL\, Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis\, MO\, Ballroom Marfa in Marfa\, Texas and The Soap Factory in Minneapolis. \nShe was an artist-in-residence at the Santa Fe Art Institute and at Louisiana Artworks in New Orleans.  She is a founding member of the New Orleans-based visual arts collective Antenna Gallery. Courtney holds an M.F.A. from Maryland Institute College of Art. \nHer artwork has been reviewed in Sculpture Magazine\, OxfordAmerican.com\, PelicanBomb.com\, Artforum.com and the New Orleans weekly Gambit. Her work is a part of the Frederick R. They may also know him for his role in the HBO series TREME where he played himself or as the creative force behind NINE LIVES\, a musical adaptation of the best-selling novel by Dan Baum. NINE LIVES follows the lives of nine people in New Orleans from 1965 (the year Hurricane Betsy ravaged the city) through 2005 (the year of Hurricane Katrina) and beyond. \nPaul Sanchez transforms audiences with his unique blend of music and storytelling – at once powerful\, sad\, humorous\, entertaining and hopeful. \nLike many New Orleanians\, Paul lost his home and was tremendously impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Sanchez confesses\, “I lost my home\, my possessions\, community and eventually my job after the flood. I was changed\, am changed as a person and it couldn’t help but change my music”. Like many\, he struggled to find a new identity after Hurricane Katrina. After much soul-searching\, he left Cowboy Mouth to go solo. \nPaul Sanchez began writing songs and playing his first professional shows in the French Quarter before he turned sixteen. By the 1980s\, Paul was an established part of the New Orleans rock scene\, playing in The Backbeats along with Vance DeGeneres\, another native New Orleanian. \nHe lived in New York City in the late 80s and was part of the now legendary Anti-Folk scene in the East Village. \nOffbeat Magazine awarded Paul Songwriter of the Year in 2014. He won three Best of The Beat Awards in 2010: Songwriter of The Year\, Best Song of The Year and Best Folk/Rock Album for Stew Called New Orleans\, his duet record with friend and collaborator John Boutte. In April of that same year\, Gambit Weekly awarded him Best Roots Rock Performer at The Big Easy Awards. \nPrimarily a songwriter\, Sanchez has written songs for Darius Rucker of Hootie and The Blowfish\, had a song in the country charts that was recorded by The Eli Young Band and a song covered by Irma Thomas\, the Soul Queen of New Orleans. Paul resides in the Treme neighborhood\, where he sings and breathes everything New Orleans. \nPurchase Tickets
