SUMMARY:Jasen Weaver
DESCRIPTION:Based in New Orleans\, Louisiana\, Jasen Weaver is one of the most in demand bassists in the\ncity. When he’s not leading his own sextet\, you can find him on the bandstand with notable\nartists such as Donald Harrison and Jason Marsalis. He is also a regular at some of the most\nrecognized venues in New Orleans such as Preservation Hall\, Snug Harbor\, and Bacchanal\nWine. \nOther notable artists Weaver has performed with include: Adonis Rose\, Amina Figarova\, Bill\nSummers\, Brian Lynch\, Christian Winther\, Corey Fonville\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Delfeayo\nMarsalis\, Don Byron\, Ellis Marsalis\, Emmet Cohen\, Germaine Bazzle\, Godwin Louis\, Herlin\nRiley\, Jamison Ross\, Jeremy Pelt\, Joe Dyson\, Jon Batiste\, Juvenile\, Lucien Barbarin\, Mannie\nFresh\, Maurice Brown\, Mike Clark\, Nicholas Payton\, Quiana Lynell\, Sasha Masakowski\,\nShannon Powell\, Stefon Harris\, Steve Masakowski\, Steve Turre\, Sullivan Fortner\, Terell\nStafford\, The Session\, Theo Croker\, Victor Goines\, Vincent Gardner\, Wayne Escoffery\, Wes\nAnderson and more. \nA graduate of the prestigious New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) as well as the\nUniversity of New Orleans\, Jasen was positioned to be an impact player in the music scene\nfrom a very young age. While in high school he was also a member of the Tipitina’s Internship\nProgram under the tutelage of the great Donald Harrison\, whose band he joined years later.\nAside from being an active performer\, Jasen also gives back to the music community by\nteaching. He was a student teacher at the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music while in\ncollege and is currently a faculty member at the Sanaa Music Workshop. \nJasen has toured in Europe\, Australia\, South Africa\, Honduras\, Japan and many cities in the\nUnited States. He has played legendary venues such as Yoshi’s (Oakland\, CA)\, The Jazz\nShowcase (Chicago\,IL)\, The Apollo Theatre (New York\, NY)\, and Ronnie Scott’s (London). He\nalso has made a name for himself as a recording artist having appeared on albums by Carmela\nRappazzo\, David L. Harris\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Dr. John\, The Ellis Marsalis Center for Music\nJazz Orchestra\, Jason Marsalis\, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra and many more. \nAs a bandleader\, Jasen released his debut album\, “The Voscoville” in March 2018 and made\nhis first appearance at the world famous New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival that same\nyear. He has been featured on Saturday nights at Bacchanal Wine since Fall 2012. Sammy\nStein\, of Something Else reviews\, may have summed it up best: ”Jasen has the authority and\nprivilege to surround himself with talented and also serious musicians. You can hear Monk\,\nmaybe Shorter and definitely NOLA in these tracks. More than that\, you hear the heart of a\nyoung jazz musician who\, if this is his first release of his own compositions and arrangements\,\nwe are definitely going to be hearing more of.”

SUMMARY:Papa Mali
DESCRIPTION:Papa Mali (born Malcolm Helm Welbourne in Vicksburg\, Mississippi\, May 6\, 1957) is a New Orleans based\, American singer-songwriter\, guitarist and producer. \nHe has been a touring musician and recording artist for decades. Yet\, he is probably best known as the front man for 7 Walkers\, a band formed in 2009 that includes three musical icons: Grateful Dead founding member and drummer\, Bill Kreutzmann\, The Meters’ founding bassist\, George Porter Jr.\, and lyricist\, Robert Hunter\, who penned most of the Grateful Dead’s classic catalog (along with the late Jerry Garcia) and now co-writes much of 7 Walkers’ material with Welbourne. Multi-instrumentalist\, vocalist and Willie Nelson collaborator\, Matt Hubbard\, completes the line-up. Their self-titled debut was released to critical acclaim in November of 2010. \nPapa Mali is also known for his own live performances and recorded output\, most notably his two albums for Fog City Records (2000’s “Thunder Chicken” and 2007’s “Do Your Thing”)\, both produced by Dan Prothero and the latter featuring some of New Orleans’ most legendary musicians. \nHis work as a producer includes 7 Walkers (“Response\,” 2010)\, The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster (“Blue Corn\,” 2007) and records by Lavelle White\, Omar and the Howlers\, Wendy Colonna\, The Greyhounds and others. \nWhen not on tour with 7 Walkers\, Papa Mali can usually be found at home in New Orleans\, where he regularly performs with his own band\, Double Uptown Shotgun – often at his favorite neighborhood watering hole\, The Maple Leaf Bar or at nearby Tipitina’s. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Artist Workshop: Moving Shapes
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second in a series of three workshops incorporating simple mindfulness meditation practices and observation techniques to create contemplative abstract paintings inspired by the styles of Dusti Bongé’s abstract expressionist oeuvre. \nLooking at the work of Dusti Bongé we can see patterns emerge from the chaos of an abstracted surface. These patterns begin as familiar objects from sailboats to windows to tall cypress swamp trees and move into pure expressions of movement and color. From precision to chaos\, learn how to observe and create an abstract painting based on repetition. What shape\, symbol\, form or landscape is worth repeating in your own abstract painting? \n$40 for members\, $45 for non-members per workshop. \nThe “Moving Shapes” artist workshop is full! Please email education@ogdenmuseum.org to be placed on the waitlist.  \nClick below to learn more and register for the “Arrow in the Wall” artist workshop on July 13.  \nWorkshop 3: Arrow in the Wall\n/// Dusti Bongé\, Infinity (detail)\, 1980\, Oil on Masonite\, Collection of Bill Goldring \n

SUMMARY:Ross Newell
DESCRIPTION:Ross Newell can usually be seen and heard as the lead singer and songwriter in The Mulligan Brothers from Mobile\, AL. His song writing weaves heartfelt tales of love and loss into complex yet comforting storytelling\, a combination that will leave you nostalgic for something (or someone) that you can’t quite put your finger on. With a remarkable universality\, you could as easily imagine the tales spilling from the mouth of a storied\, laugh-lined old man as his teenage grandson grieves his first heartbreak. He sings and plays about where they’ve been in a way that makes us all realize we’ve been there\, too. \n“Newell’s voice tends to be very contemporary. He often overlays the rippling flow of the music with a fast-paced\, verbose patter\, and he packs songs with sharp imagery. Newell has a gift for phrases that pop out and grab you\, even when you’ve set the album playing in the background. ” — Lawrence Specker\, AL.com \n“If you’re a fan of Trampled by Turtles\, then you’re going to feel right at home listening to Ross Newell on lead vocals.” — Regional Musician Magazine \n“Singer/songwriter Ross Newell brings a warmth and finely crafted talent to the experience\, and the superb vocal tone of Newell is without doubt one of the finest live voices I have heard in some time. Newell is a fine writer and his eye for a couplet is as finely honed as ever.” — Paul McGee\, Lonesome Highway Magazine \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Jimmy Robinson with Master Percussionist Michael Skinkus
DESCRIPTION:Jimmy Robinson has been recording and touring for over 40 years. He has received critical and audience praise for his unique virtuoso approach to the guitar and his rich compositional skill. \n\nJimmy first made a name for himself playing electric guitar and leading a psychedelic rock/blues band at the free concert weekly series on New Orleans Riverfront. He went on to front the progrock band Laugh In The Dark in the 70s\, and in 1975 he founded the celebrated instrumental rock fusion band Woodenhead. Woodenhead celebrated their 40th anniversary with a special performance at The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in May of 2015 and released a recording of new material\, a live concert from New Orleans’ famed  Tipitina’s and a reissue of their entire\, remastered catalog. Robinson also founded the New Orleans Guitar Collective Twangorama\, with guitarists Phil deGruy and Cranston Clements\, and later The New Orleans Guitar Quartet . \n\n\nJimmy studied classical guitar and composition at Loyola University in New Orleans and The Eastman School Of Music in New York. He combined these elements with his electric experience to forge the solo acoustic style that he now tours with. His has three solo albums to his credit\, “Vibrating Strings\,” “Guitarworks” and “Three.” \nPurchase Tickets
