SUMMARY:Sabertooth Swing
DESCRIPTION:The New Orleans based group\, Sabertooth Swing\, is focused on delivering a fun and energetic performance in an authentic traditional jazz style\, very well suited for a general audience looking for a great time\, or even for people who want to get up and dance. The group is composed of musicians of various origin and musical background\, with much love and respect for New Orleans’ own musical heritage. These elements are well reflected in their debut album “Extinct Possibilities\,” with musical experiments such as arranging a Skatalites tunes a-la New Orleans marching style\, merging the poetic beauty of Georges Brassens’ chansons with Amy Winehouse’s sultry jazz and even covering the English rock band\, The Kinks\, with an interesting mix of Latin and swing rhythms\, following an idea originally laid down in tunes such as “St. Louis Blues.” \nPurchase Tickets\n

SUMMARY:Seva Venet Bicentennial Celebration of the Banjo in New Orleans (1819-2019)
DESCRIPTION:Seva Venet with Dr. Michael White\, Shannon Powell and Richie Moten \nSeva’s first apprenticeship in New Olreans jazz began in 1999 with Tuba Fats and his Chosen Few band.  Seva worked with Tuba Fats for four years with many long (8-10 hour) days in Jackson Square\, as well as an extended engagement at Donn’s Bar and Grill\, and a myriad of other jobs including second-line parades\, French Quarter Fest\, Satchmo Fest and Krewe du Vieux\, to name a few.  It was during his time with Tuba\, Seva was introduced to many of the local greats including Greg Stafford\, Leroy Jones and Shannon Powell\, who after first playing with Seva exclaimed\,  “I came up with Danny Barker!  You sound like Danny Barker!  Get a gitjo [a 6-string banjo] and come by my house…we’re going to record.” \nBy the time Tuba Fats passed in 2004\, Seva had picked the six-string banjo and branched out to work with hundreds of other local musicians.  Over the last two decades\, Seva has worked as a sideman on guitar and banjo with many New Orleans ensembles including bands led by Dr. Michael White\, Greg Stafford\, Shannon Powell\, Lars Edegran\, Lionel Ferbos\, Clive Wilson and Treme Brass Band\, to name a few.   Seva also leads his own jazz band that features the tenor and 6-string banjos in a traditional New Orleans jazz ensemble and Seva also leads a string band\, the Storyville String Band\, which specializes in traditional New Orleans jazz but in a string dominated acoustic ensemble (bass\, guitar\, Hawaiian (slide)\, mandolin\, voile and ukulele).  As a leader and a sideman\, Seva has played numerous festivals\, concerts and events around the United States and toured in Europe\, Japan and Taiwan. \nWhile at the O for Ogden After Hours\, explore the work of artist Dusti Bongé through our latest exhibition\, Piercing the Inner Wall. Widely considered to be the first Mississippi artist to work consistently in a Modernist style\, this exhibition brings together works from throughout Bongé’s career – from both private and public collections – to tell the story of one woman’s fierce dedication to a creative life\, culminating in a body of work that stands testament to her strong contribution to American Art after World War I. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of International Sculpture Day\, a series of worldwide events advancing the creation and understanding of sculpture\, join us for a panel discussion on the art and influence of Ida Kohlmeyer. \nOn the morning of April 23\, the Poydras Corridor Sculpture Exhibition presented by The Helis Foundation\, the South’s leading rotating public art exhibition\, will welcome home Box of Artificial Flowers #6\, a sculpture by the late Ida Kohlmeyer. Following the installation\, a panel discussion on the life and art of Ida Kohlmeyer will take place in the Ogden Museum’s Patrick F. Taylor Library at 12:30 p.m. Panelists include Xavier University’s Ron Bechet\, Kohlmeyer’s daughter\, Jane Lowentritt\, long-time gallerist\, Arthur Roger and Ogden Museum Executive Director\, William Pittman Andrews. The panel will be moderated by Ogden Museum Curator of the Collection\, Bradley Sumrall. \nLight refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.  \nAbout Box of Artificial Flowers #6 \nAt 17 feet tall and 14 feet wide\, Box of Artificial Flowers #6 is the largest single sculpture Kohlmeyer created. Before being acquired nearly 35 years ago by a private collector in suburban Chicago\, the sculpture was temporarily sited in the New Orleans Museum of Art’s (NOMA) iconic reflecting pool in front of the Museum as part of an exhibition organized by the Mint Museum in Charlotte\, North Carolina. Kohlmeyer first exhibited her work at NOMA in 1957. The Helis Foundation purchased the sculpture from the private collector in mid-2018 and invested in the complete restoration of the piece by one of Kohlmeyer’s original studio assistants\, G. Paul Lucas. Lucas\, now based in Kansas City\, worked with the artist from 1989 until her death in 1997 and restores two to three pieces of her work a year. After the restoration was completed\, the sculpture was transported home to New Orleans\, as part of The Helis Foundation Collection\, to join the eighteen other sculptures on view along the Poydras Corridor. \nAbout The Poydras Corridor Sculpture Exhibition presented by The Helis Foundation \nThe Poydras Corridor Sculpture Exhibition presented by The Helis Foundation was founded in 2013 as an initiative of non-profit organization\, Sculpture for New Orleans\, and has quickly become the South’s leading rotating public sculpture exhibition. Sculptor Michael Manjarris founded Sculpture for New Orleans shortly after Hurricane Katrina with the mission of lifting the spirits of the people of New Orleans through public art and providing local and regional artists the opportunity to show in a public venue. \nA unique example of a public-private partnership\, Sculpture for New Orleans\, The Helis Foundation\, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, and The City of New Orleans Department of Parks and Parkways work together to bring interesting and inspiring sculpture to the citizens of and visitors to New Orleans. \nThe Poydras Corridor Sculpture Exhibition presented by The Helis Foundation has installed 35 sculptures by artists of local and international acclaim on Poydras Street between Convention Center Boulevard and South Galvez. Prior to being installed on Poydras Street\, the Design Advisory Committee of the City of New Orleans City Planning Commission reviews and approves the sculptures for content\, location\, and safety\, exercising its authority to request adjustments when necessary. The Helis Foundation funds every aspect of the exhibition\, including the recent installation of lighting along the sculpture pads.

SUMMARY:Ben Hunter
DESCRIPTION:Ben E. Hunter has performed nationally and locally for the past 20+ years as a reggae artist with seven studio albums recorded in New Orleans\, Jamaica\, and Los Angeles. After a series of traumatic personal events (including Katrina)\, he felt the need to share something more personally relevant through his original songwriting and acoustic performance style. \nNew Orleans Afro-Caribbean Folk Music is a musical style that Ben created by combining his personal musical histories of reggae\, New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian chants and West African drum rhythms. He is developing this genre through a musical library of all original songs based on his experiences growing up in the Treme before and after hurricane Katrina. \nBen E. Hunter has recorded three studio albums in this pioneering new New Orleans’ genre: “Traveler\,” “The Nature of Things” and “Break out Bold.” He is most known for his legendary reggae performance and recording history in New Orleans. As a regular and ultimately trend-setting performer at Café Brazil on Frenchmen St. for over a decade prior to Katrina\, he was the creator and bandleader for both\, “Ben Hunter & The Plantation Posse” and “Ben Hunter & Crucial Roots”\, producing albums including “Voodoo Reggae\,” “Reality Check\,” “Soul Avenger Live Intergalactic” and “A Freedom Song”. Locally\, Ben has headlined at Tipitina’s\, The House of Blues (as one of the first local acts to ever headline HOB)\, Essence Music Fest and performed at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for eight consecutive years. Nationally and internationally\, he performed as one of the headliners for the Bob Marley Festival Tour for five years and at Reggae Sun Splash in Montego Bay\, Jamaica. \nThese works earned him esteemed awards such as The Big Easy Award for Best Reggae/African and The Louisiana Film Festival Award for Best Music Video. Ben E. Hunter was also featured on the cover of Offbeat Magazine for his performance at the International Arts Festival in the 90s and again for Offbeat’s Ten Year Anniversary\, honoring modern and historic New Orleans’ legends. In 1994\, The Times Picayune featured Ben on the cover with the headline\, “Ben Hunter Kicks Up His Heels at JazzFest Opening Day.”   \nBen took a decade-long musical hiatus to recover from a college football head injury which caused a period of seizures. His return to music rapidly developed into an outpouring of songs in this new genre that traverses more deeply into his New Orleans musical influences while demonstrating the impact of his Caribbean and African histories.    \nBen E. Hunter presently opens every Wednesday night at Snug Harbor for Delfeayo Marsalis and The Uptown Jazz Orchestra while working on recording his fourth album of New Orleans Afro-Caribbean Folk Music. \nPurchase Tickets
