SUMMARY:David L. Harris sings Nat King Cole
DESCRIPTION:American trombonist\, vocalist and composer David L. Harris embodies the edge of modern jazz and the sultriness of blues. Every time he steps on stage\, David takes us on the emotionally engaging journey of love and liberation\, wrapped in a sound that embraces the groove\, grit and swing of the past. Growing up in a neighborhood called Scotlandville\, in Baton Rouge\, La\, David L. found his fingers pressed against the sliding brace of the trombone at the age of 16 and has never let go since. International and domestic audiences alike adore his band (as do the critics!). Music lovers have stepped and grooved to the sound of his trombone at some of the liveliest jazz festivals in the world such as The Newport Jazz Festival\, The Montreal Jazz Festival and The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. David L. has graced legendary concert halls\, such as the Apollo Theatre in Harlem\, NY\, The Lincoln Center in New York\, NY\, and The L’Olympia Music Hall in Paris\, France; and has performed\, recorded and collaborated with artists Herlin Riley\, Wynton Marsalis\, Shannon Powell\, Aaron Neville\, Aloe Blacc\, Dr. Michael White\, Dee Dee Bridgewater and The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.\n \nHarris would spend seven hours a day practicing while allowing the sounds of legendary musicians like Tyree Glenn\, Joe “Tricky Sam” Nanton and Al Grey to train him along the way. He went on to further his knowledge of music and fine-tune his technique by continuing his studies at Southern University\, Louisiana State University\, and the University of New Orleans. Continuing to let his love for music lead him\, nowadays he can be found swinging his plunger mute gently against the bell of his Antoine Courtois trombone\, while playing alongside highly noted musicians at concerts and festivals all over the world. He has captured and moved audiences in China\, Europe\, Taiwan\, Russia\, South America\, Australia\, Canada\, South Africa and in over twenty cities in Japan. Harris demonstrates in every show how he prizes the gift of sharing jazz from New Orleans\, for the genre enables the creation of artwork that could not be made anywhere else in the world. His masterful team joins him in this endeavor\, most recently with the critically-acclaimed “Blues I Felt\,” Harris’ debut album. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Little Freddie King
DESCRIPTION:Born in McComb\, Mississippi in 1940\, Fread E. Martin grew up playing alongside his blues guitar picking father Jessie James Martin\, then rode the rails to New Orleans during the early 1950s where he crossed paths with itinerant South Louisiana blues men such as “Polka-Dot” Slim and “Boogie” Bill Webb\, whose unique country-cum-urban styles would influence his own. Honing his guitar chops at notorious joints like the Bucket of Blood (which he later immortalized in song)\, he jammed and gigged with Bo Diddley and John Lee Hooker\, and also played bass for Freddie King during one of the guitarist’s stints in New Orleans. People began comparing the two musicians’ styles\, hence Martin’s nom-de-plume. While well-vested in a variety of styles\, nowadays\, Little Freddie sounds a lot more like his cousin Lightnin’ Hopkins – albeit after a three day corn liquor bender. Nevertheless\, the King sobriquet is fitting\, as Freddie is undeniably the monarch of the Crescent City Blues scene. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Opening Reception of Artist Spotlight: Mimi Logothetis
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Museum’s live music series\, Ogden After Hours. \nThe Center for Southern Craft & Design presents the porcelain work of Mimi Logothetis who lives and works in Cedar Grove\, NC.  She prefers porcelain for its purity\, starkness\, density\, strength and translucency and she uses a proprietary printing technique to apply graphics to the surface to tell stories or wry jokes. Her work focuses on environmental issues\, man vs. nature and human interpersonal issues\, man vs. man.  Sculpturally\, Mimi uses light inside very thin\, translucent walls to illuminate ideas from inside. She has recently collaborated with lighting and furniture designers\, Skram Furniture\, to create a line of chandeliers\, as well as floor\, and pendant lamps.

SUMMARY:Artist Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Explore The Whole Drum Will Sound: Women in Southern Abstraction with exhibiting artist\, Shawne Major\, and create your own abstract composition. Equally conversant in the main traditions of assemblage art since early modernism and the folk art traditions of the American South\, Major’s work is an artist’s haul of sewn disparate materials pulled into self-revelatory patterns. Made from products of disposable production – buttons\, electrical wiring\, wood\, plastic toys\, fabric and the like – Major creates a remix tableaux with a three-dimensional materiality. \nThis workshop is full. SUMMARY:Naked on the Floor with Jonathan Freilich

As a leader: The New Orleans Klezmer All Stars\, The Naked Orchestra and this band\, all playing continuously for 20 years. As well as that\, he has worked with a list of great New Orleans performers ranging from Henry Butler\, to Kermit Ruffins\, 007\, Alex Mcmurray\, and many points in between.  He has arranged music for projects from U2 to Basque legend\, Fermin Muguruza. \nThe current band features some of the cities finest- James Singleton-bass; Rick Trolsen-trombone; Dan Oestreicher- sax; and the mystery guest. Representatives of bands from Trombone Shorty to Professor Longhair.  Great composers and leaders\, all. \n\n\nPurchase Tickets
