SUMMARY:GiveNOLA Day
DESCRIPTION:Give Here\nSupport the O on GiveNOLA Day! Donate to the Ogden Museum on May 1 and help support our mission to broaden the knowledge\, understanding\, interpretation and appreciation of the visual arts and culture of the American South through its events\, permanent collections\, changing exhibitions\, educational programs\, publications and research. \nWhat is GiveNOLA Day?  \nGiveNOLA Day is a 24 hour event hosted by the Greater New Orleans Foundation to inspire people to give generously to nonprofits making our region stronger\, creating a thriving community for all. GiveNOLA Day raises money for the community brings new donors to local nonprofits and shows that anyone can be a philanthropist. \nWhat does my donation support?  \nYour donation supports a wide variety of programming at the Museum\, including our dynamic exhibitions of painting\, sculpture\, photography and more and our educational programming which impacts more than 15\,000 area children and adults annually. It also supports our popular weekly entertainment series\, Ogden After Hours. \nWhy donate to the Ogden Museum?  \nExposing students to the arts improves problem-solving\, critical thinking\, empathy\, language development and social skills. A 2013 study by Americans for the Arts states that young people who participate regularly in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement\, to participate in a math or science fair or to win an award for writing an essay or poem than children who do not participate. Despite these remarkable statistics\, nearly 60% of Louisiana schools have no budget for arts education. The Ogden Museum strives to fill this gap for thousands of students each year. \nHaving cultural institutions in our communities provides a sense of collective identity\, improves a community’s image\, builds social capital\, and promotes cultural diversity. \nOne of the best factors to show the positive effect the arts have on our nation is to look at the economic impact of the industry. Nationally\, the arts industry generates over $135 billion of economic activity – $61 billion by the nation’s nonprofit arts and culture organizations in addition to $74 billion in event-related expenditures by their audiences. This economic activity supports 4.13 million full-time jobs that generate $86.8 billion in resident household income. The industry also provides $22.3 billion in revenue to local\, state\, and federal governments every year.   \n\n\n\nIn New Orleans\, cultural non-profits spent $7.1 million in the city in the year 2015. Median local expenditure was $150\,000. These dollars infuse our local economy\, contributing to local government through sales taxes\, and in turn allowing for more spending in the local economy. \n\nSupporting the arts directly supports our community. We thank you for your generosity and take the responsibility of putting your donations to the best possible use very seriously. The Ogden Museum is proud to be a vital part of the New Orleans arts community\, and is dedicated to serving this city\, its residents\, and its visitors. \nIn 2017\, the Museum welcomed over 85\,000 visitors from all 50 states and 49 countries around the world. With your support we can continue to share the art and culture of the American South with even more people in 2018. \nThank you for your support! \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Tonya Boyd-Cannon
DESCRIPTION:Mississippi-born\, Louisiana-raised\, singer-songwriter and Soul artist Tonya Boyd-Cannon is no stranger to the music scene. This daughter of a preacher has been singing since she was a child. Although most of her musical training came by way of middle school and high school band directors\, Boyd-Cannon is a classically trained vocalist with a Bachelors of Arts in Music from Tougaloo College. \nTonya Boyd-Cannon’s professional career started as a background vocalist for Jean Knight\, who’s best known for her 1970’s hit single\, “Mr. Big Stuff”. Tonya’s professional career also includes work as a vocal coach\, educator and Minister of Music. Additionally\, she is credited with creating the first\, combined male and female mass choir in the Orleans Parish prison in New Orleans. Tonya’s fairly rare contralto voice\, almost identical to that of a countertenor\, pushes the envelope with amazing soulful arrangements and jazzy lyrical content. \nTonya’s career catapulted when she appeared on Season 8 of NBC’s “The Voice\,” where she wowed the crowd\, and her coach Adam Levine. Tonya ranked in the Top 20 finals\, leaving the show with her powerful rendition of “Take Me to the Pilot” by Elton John. Tonya returned home to New Orleans excited to release her sophomore album “MUZIC Is Life” in 2016. The album landed in ten categories in the first round of “The GRAMMY’s. Her message of “MUZIC is Life\,” continues to reach hearts and souls worldwide: “Music is life\, music is love\, you are golden!” \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Cha Wa
DESCRIPTION:From the funk-laced beats and bass-heavy sousaphone blasts that kick off their album “Spyboy\,” to the gritty warmth of singer J’Wan Boudreaux’s voice\, New Orleans brass band-meets-Mardi Gras Indian outfit Cha Wa radiates the fiery energy of the best features of the city’s street culture. \n\n\n\nSpyboy digs deep into the sound of New Orleans culture and gives it a modern twist. The disc’s largely original material takes advantage of the band’s new horn section to highlight the musician’s personal ties to the street music of their hometown. “We wanted to take the roots of what we love about New Orleans brass band music and Mardi Gras Indian music\, and then voice it in our own way\,” says the group’s drummer and founder\, Joe Gelini. \n“Spyboy” was produced by Galactic’s Ben Ellman and features special guests Big Chief Monk Boudreaux (The Wild Magnolias\, HBO’s Treme)\, Nigel Hall (Lettuce\,Nth Power)\, and Danica Hart. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Artist Workshop
DESCRIPTION:After a tour of The Whole Drum Will Sound: Women in Southern Abstraction\, artist and educator Shawn Hall will guide participants through self-exploration of ideas and approaches to abstract painting. Abstract painting is grounded in conceptual thinking\, self-determined parameters\, decision making and risk taking. It occupies the liminal space between thought and action\, i.e. intuition\, and requires deft paint handling\, trust and vision. Working with acrylics on canvas\, this workshop will give participants a window into the world of abstraction. \nRegister\n  \nShawn Hall\, BIOlogy\, 2006\, Acrylic on Canvas\, Gift of Andrea Savonuzzi\, 2008.5.1

SUMMARY:Erica Falls
DESCRIPTION:Soul singer and songwriter Erica Falls credits her unique vintage sound to her childhood growing up in New Orleans’ 9th Ward\, where her parents introduced her to Roberta Flack\, Aretha Franklin\, Stevie Wonder\, Nina Simone\, Sarah Vaughn\, and Whitney Houston.  Whether on stage or in the studio\, she channels a sassy\, soulful tone that recalls an earlier era. But Erica cautions her fans: “Vintage soul is not about bringing the listener back to a time of authentic music\, it’s about reminding them that it never went anywhere\,” she says. \nErica’s debut 2011 album\, “Me\, Myself & Music\,” showcased her singing\, arranging\, and songwriting talent\, and introduced her to a wider audience in the world of neo-soul.  In the years since\, Erica has recorded and performed with icons including Grammy®-winner Allen Toussaint\, Sting\, No Doubt\, Joe Sample\, Dr. John\, Jennifer Hudson\, and John Fogerty\, among others.  Her show-stopping performances did not go unnoticed. Offbeat Magazine nominated Erica twice for Best Female Vocalist.  In 2013\, she was hand-picked by Lee Daniels to star in the lead singing role of the award-winning film “The Butler.” \nCurrently\, Erica is touring nationally with renowned New Orleans funk band Galactic\, and is recording her sophomore album\, “Vintage Soul.” The highly-anticipated album features ten energetic\, original tracks that continue to showcase her prowess as a singer\, songwriter\, and live performer. \n“If red beans and rice could sing they’d sound like Erica Falls.” – Cyril Neville\n\nPurchase Tickets
