SUMMARY:Jamaican Me Breakfast Club
DESCRIPTION:Brewed in New Orleans from an inspired mash-up of influences\, Jamaican Me Breakfast Club plays New Wave radio hits from the 1980s re-imagined as roots reggae. Call it pop rock steady or just plain fun. It’s feel-good music with a nod and a wink. Since emerging on the scene in October 2016 with a triumphant debut at the legendary Tipitina’s (opening for another New Wave-meets-reggae band\, Talking Dreads)\, JMBC has steadily built a following with performances at the Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo Festival\, Vaughn’s Lounge\, Gasa Gasa\, the Allways Lounge\, and other venues. Some of the Crescent City’s top singers and players – including members of Tank and the Bangas\, Trumpet Mafia\, the Revealers and the Ellis Marsalis Quartet – combine talents to give JMBC a dancehall pulse with irie vibes. Their laid back island rhythms\, soulful harmonies and playful arrangements all turn classic songs into joyous sing-alongs\, so kick off your flip-flops\, crack open a Red Stripe and groove to the pleasantly familiar\, but charmingly different sounds of Jamaican Me Breakfast Club. \n“A group that could only happen in New Orleans.” – Jay Mazza\, thevinyldistrict.com \nPurchase Tickets\nPhoto by Rick Moore

SUMMARY:Frances Rodriguez Pop-Up
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Ogden After Hours featuring the Jamaican Me Breakfast Club\, Frances Rodriguez will be in the Library with a mini version of her in-store pop-up! Her work is hand-stitched and painted with love and makes a perfect Mother’s Day Gift! \nThe Center for Southern Craft & Design is presenting a month-long (March 29 – April 30) in-store pop-up featuring the work of Frances Rodriguez\, who lives and works in New Orleans\, Louisiana. The red clay earth and lightning bugs from her childhood in Alabama left a distinct impression that carried into her textile degree work at The Rhode Island School of Design. Patterns\, textures and colors from the South’s natural world consistently appear in both her textile and painted pieces. Frances is inspired by water\, warm tropical heat and the playful spirit of the animal world. In response\, her artwork reflects the humor\, quietude and brightness of possibility.

SUMMARY:Maggie Belle Band
DESCRIPTION:Maggie Belle Band plays an original blend of R&B\, soul\, funk\, blues\, with the occasional touch of hip hop. Born of the musical whirlpool that drew many of its members to New Orleans from all corners of the U.S.\, Maggie Belle Band has been making a splash  by combining solid grooves from a tasteful rhythm section with deep and heartfelt vocal performances from Maggie Belle herself. The band has been described as having “the rhythm of a J Dilla track and the soulful vocals of an early Grace Slick” and “emotive and fun\, with a hint of illicitness and noir.” \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Opening Reception of Artist Spotlight: Paula Kovarik
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Museum’s live music series\, Ogden After Hours. \nThe Center for Southern Craft & Design at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art is presenting its quarterly Artist Spotlight exhibition featuring work by Paula Kovarik\, a fabric artist based in Memphis\, Tennessee. A degree in graphic design informs her approach to her textural and multi-layered art\, which she makes with thread and fabric. She says\, “Stitching is an extension of my thoughts through my hands. It’s about the edges as defined by line. It’s about the inner coming out. It’s about the layered\, ripped\, cut and sandwiched together. I am sensitive to surprises\, allowing the stitched drawings to tell me more than I think I know.” Kovarik’s work has been selected and recognized in Quilt National\, Quilts=Art=Quilts\, Delta Arts Exhibition and Art Quilt Elements. She was a featured artist at the Grand Rapids Museum of Art at Art Prize 2015 and has been profiled in American Craft magazine\, Art Quilting Studio and Fiber Art Now.

SUMMARY:Book Signing: Guns in the Hands of Artists by Jonathan Ferrara
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Ferrara will be here to sign copies of “Guns in the Hands of Artists\,” the companion book to the traveling exhibition of the same name. \nGuns in the Hands of Artists is a community-based social-activist artistic project that is currently traveling the country. Decommissioned guns taken off the streets of New Orleans were distributed to over 30 internationally known artists to use as the raw materials in creating works of art addressing the issue of guns and gun violence in our society. The exhibition fosters a new conversation by bringing the discussion into the realm of art; without the often partisan and polarized politics that surround the issue. \n\n\n“Guns in the Hands of Artists” includes essays by Walter Isaacson\, Senator Tim Kaine\, Lupe Fiasco\, Richard Ford\, Joe Nocera\, Trymaine Lee\, Lolis Eric Elie\, John M. Barry\, Dan Cameron\, Lucia McBath\, Harry Shearer\, Jonathan Ferrara\, Brian Borrello\, Maria Cuomo Cole\, Michael Waldman\, E. Ethelbert Miller\, Mayor Mitchell J. Landrieu\, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly. \nIn his new book\, Ferrara brings a hauntingly beautiful new perspective to the national conversation about gun violence in America and how we understand it. Required reading for anyone looking to shift the American gun violence discussion from on rooted in debate to one striving for solutions. – Dan Gross\, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence \n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: copyright Charlie Varley

SUMMARY:Andre Bohren
DESCRIPTION:Andre Bohren is a lifelong musician\, having played professionally from the age of 14. Growing up in a musical environment and picking up many different instruments helped keep Andre’s interests varied. He has played guitar\, bass\, keyboards and percussion in various musical settings\, but he is best-known for founding and holding down the drum seat for Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes (JSDN)\, one of the most eclectic funk-rock bands in New Orleans over the past 15 years. Another facet of Andre’s musicianship is a deep love of classical piano music\, having seriously studied the nuances of the genres for decades. At 16\, Andre played Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue as the featured soloist with the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra\, and received many awards at various piano competitions before he was 18. Shortly after high school\, he toured France and Spain with his father\, storytelling bluesman Spencer Bohren. In 2001\, while studying classical piano music at Loyola University in New Orleans\, he helped found JSDN. After more than a decade of touring\, Andre returned to his piano studies\, this time at the University Of New Orleans\, where he finished his music degree in 2015. While maintaining a scaled- down touring schedule\, Andre performs and records regularly with a diverse cross-section of New Orleans artists\, including JSDN\, Rory Danger & The Danger Dangers\, Spencer Bohren\, Dave Jordan\, Mike Doussan\, Chris Mule\, The Walrus and more\, in addition to many solo piano engagements. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Nolatet
DESCRIPTION:As vibration attracts like vibration\, it’s no surprise after years of collaboration\, vibraphonist Mike Dillon\, pianist Brian Haas\, bassist James Singleton and drummer Johnny Vidacovich should finally become one with the formation of the Nolatet and the subsequent release of their debut album\, Dogs. These four men have been in each other’s lives for as long as they can remember. Vidacovich and Singleton have been New Orleans’ best rhythm section since 1977\, having backed everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to Professor Longhair to James Booker. Dillon and Haas have been sharing bills and sitting in with each other’s bands\, including Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey\, Garage A Trois and Dead Kenny Gs\, on the same touring circuit since the mid-’90s. All four have played together countless times in numerous configurations. Individually\, they are fiercely independent iconoclasts and bandleaders who compose\, play and navigate their musical lives true to their own idiosyncratic visions. \n\n“Musically speaking\, the Nolatet is fearless. The music ebbs and flows effortlessly\, like rebirthing an amoeba\,” explains Mike Dillon. “We have one of the all time great New Orleans rhythm sections in Johnny Vidacovich and James Singleton. Like any great rhythm section\, they make you find parts of yourself that you never knew existed. With that as our foundation\, there’s no telling how far the music can expand with each performance.” \nPurchase Tickets\nPhoto credit: Zack Smith
