SUMMARY:Artist Workshop with Horton Humble
DESCRIPTION:Using Norman Lewis’ Afternoon as inspiration\, artist Horton Humble will lead participants in several exercises aimed at finding their own abstraction through the intuitive use of color. Ultimately\, each participant will craft a final abstract composition of their own design. \nBorn in New Orleans\, Horton Humble is a self-taught American painter. In 2007\, Humble’s debut show\, entitled Debris\, presented a series of paintings using wood from the Hurricane Katrina wreckage centered on themes of a lost city and water as a powerful force. In 2008\, Humble embarked on a one-year journey through Africa for his next series\, Transit Urban\, twelve paintings using local traditional fabrics depicting the energy of the people\, land and culture. Humble moved to Lisbon in 2012 where he lived for almost three years and created The Lisbon Series\, influenced by the discovery of a new medium: ceramics and its modeling techniques. Humble again returned home and established his studio with a group of fellow artists in New Orleans and co-founded the Level Artist Collective in 2015. Currently\, Humble is an artist in residence at Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans. This program has been made possible by the generous support of the Ella West Freeman Foundation\, the Selley Foundation and Entergy. \nFor adults 18 and up. \n$30 member / $35 non-member \nRegister Here \nimage credit: Norman Lewis\, Afternoon\, 1969\, Oil on canvas; 72 x 88 in.\, Collection of Pamela Joyner\, © Estate of Norman Lewis\, Courtesy of Michael Rosenfeld Gallery LLC\, New York\, NY [Photo: Courtesy of the Art Institute of Chicago\, www.artic.edu] \n

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Through the Repellent Fence
DESCRIPTION:Through the Repellent Fence follows art collective Postcommodity as they construct Repellent Fence\, a two-mile-long outdoor artwork that straddled the U.S.–Mexico border. Postcommodity consists of three Native American artists who put land art in a tribal context. In 2015 the artists worked with communities on both sides to install a series of 28 huge inflatable spheres emblazoned with an insignia known as the “open eye” that has existed in Indigenous cultures from South America to Canada for thousands of years. The artwork crossed the border a mile in each direction and symbolized a suture stitching back together cultures that have inhabited the land long before borders were drawn.\n\nThrough the Repellent Fence is an adventure in the artistic process blended with a road trip of discovery visiting sites and diverse perspectives to explore how land and art can generate community interaction and perceptual shifts in how we interpret\, engage\, and draw inspiration from our natural world. \n\nPurchase Tickets\n\n\nDirected by Sam Wainwright. Wainwright is a director and editor working out of Austin\, Texas. \nPhoto Credit: Michael Lundgren; Courtesy: Postcommodity \n\n\nhttp://ogdenmuseum.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/THROUGH-THE-REPELLENT-FENCE-Film-Trailer-1.mp4

SUMMARY:Walter Wolfman Washington
DESCRIPTION:Walter Wolfman Washington cut his teeth backing up some of the best singers and performers in New Orleans history before putting together his long time band The Roadmasters who have been burning down and burning up local and national stages since their first gigs in the 1980s. His guitar style combines both rhythm and blues\, blues\, New Orleans funk\, and modern jazz into a way of playing that is uniquely his. His singing is emotional and heartfelt.  His guitar work is intricate\, intimate\, and full. There is a little Bobby Blue Bland\, a little Kenny Burrell\, a little George Benson\, a little church\, and a lot of New Orleans charm and experience in a Walter Wolfman Washington performance. The Roadmasters are known for doing their own soulful originals and then tackling some great unsung covers such as Johnny Guitar Watson’s “You Can Stay But That Noise Got To Go\,” Otis Redding’s “Nobody’s Fault But Mine\,” and Bill Withers’ “Use Me.” And in this day and age of musicians imitating the past or trying to recreate it\, The Wolfman stands out as a musician steeped in the history but completely contemporary. Few musical acts\, if any\, do what he does.  He is real\, authentic\, and unique. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Weather Warlock
DESCRIPTION:Headless Falcon Record Release Party\nCome celebrate the winter solstice with a special edition of Ogden After Hours on the 5th Floor Terrace with Weather Warlock. \nWeather Warlock is a musical instrument built by New Orleans artist and musician\, Quintron\, which is currently positioned on the 5th Floor Terrace at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art as part of the citywide exhibition Prospect.4. The instrument is a large analog synthesizer\, which is controlled\, via a set of sensors\, by the changes in weather. The circuitry employs sun\, rain\, wind\, temperature\, moon and lightning to affect a major-chordal drone with special sonic events occurring at sunrise and sunset. You can find more information and a 24/7 live stream of the instrument at www.weatherfortheblind.com. \nHeadless Falcon\, Rhinestone Records is the second Weather Warlock album was made from base recordings made in Abu Dhabi during a live performance on Saadiyat Island. Quintron and New Orleans drummer\, Aaron Hill (EyeHateGod)\, traveled to the UAE to collaborate with a  handful of local musicians for one week\, composing and rehearsing this material\, prior to the performance. The album relies heavily on Egyptian master musician\, Sherine Thomay’s electric Oud playing. Side A ventures into new territory for Weather Warlock – a 16-minute hypnotic techno-Mellotron jam with Oud\, hand drums and cinematic desert noise phasing in and out. Side B is a slow burn prog-rock ripper in 9\, which in addition to the Middle Eastern guest musicians\, features a New Orleans horn section\, snotty Gary Wrong vocals (another WW first)\, bass rumble from Jen Attaway (Split Lips\, Unnaturls) and a prue garbe guitar solo by pete Larson (BULB records\, COUCH\, etc)\, who flew to the UAE from Kenya for the jams. \nPurchase Tickets
