SUMMARY:GiveNOLA Day
DESCRIPTION:Give Here Learn More \nWhat is GiveNOLA Day? \nGiveNOLA Day is a 24-hour event hosted by the Greater New Orleans Foundation to inspire people to give generously to nonprofit organizations that are making our region stronger\, creating a thriving community for all. GiveNOLA Day raises money for the community\, brings new donors to local nonprofits\, and shows that anyone can be a philanthropist. \nDonate to the Ogden Museum on May 2nd\, and your donation will help support our mission to broaden the knowledge\, understanding\, interpretation and appreciation of the visual arts and culture of the American South through its events\, permanent collections\, changing exhibitions\, educational programs\, publications and research. \n  \nWhat does my donation support? \n\nOgden Museum summer art camp scholarships for local students\nFree Family Days at the museum\nOgden After Hours\, the Museum’s weekly community entertainment series featuring local musicians\nThe Ogden Museum’s teen docent program\nThe Museum’s Day with an Artist program\, which brings local artists to elementary school classrooms\nSchool tours for Jefferson and Orleans parish students\nCraft and artist community workshops at the museum\nThe Ogden Museum’s exhibitions\n\n\n\nWhy donate to the Ogden Museum? \nExposing students to the arts improves problem-solving\, critical thinking\, empathy\, language development\, and social skills. A 2013 study by Americans for the Arts states that young people who participate regularly in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement\, to participate in a math or science fair or to win an award for writing an essay or poem than children who do not participate. Despite these remarkable statistics\, nearly 60% of Louisiana schools have no budget for arts education.  The Ogden Museum strives to fill this gap for thousands of students each year. \nHaving cultural institutions in our communities provides a sense of collective identity\, improves a community’s image\, builds social capital\, and promotes cultural diversity. \nOne of the best factors to show the positive effect the arts have on our nation is to look at the economic impact of the industry. Nationally\, the arts industry generates over $135 billion of economic activity – $61 billion by the nation’s nonprofit arts and culture organizations in addition to $74 billion in event-related expenditures by their audiences. This economic activity supports 4.13 million full-time jobs that generate $86.8 billion in resident household income. The industry also provides $22.3 billion in revenue to local\, state\, and federal governments every year.   \n\n\n\nIn New Orleans\, cultural non-profits spent $7.1 million in the city in the year 2015. Median local expenditure was $150\,000. These dollars infuse our local economy\, contributing to local government through sales taxes\, and in turn allowing for more spending in the local economy. \n\nSupporting the arts directly supports our community. We thank you for your generosity and take the responsibility of putting your donations to the best possible use very seriously. The Ogden Museum is proud to be a vital part of the New Orleans arts community\, and is dedicated to serving this city\, its residents\, and its visitors. In 2016\, the Museum welcomed over 85\,000 visitors from all 50 states and 64 countries around the world. With your support we can continue to share the art and culture of the American South with even more people in 2017. \nThank you for your support!

SUMMARY:Debbie Davis and Josh Paxton
DESCRIPTION:Introduced to each other by the legendary Leigh “Li’l Queenie” Harris\, Josh and Debbie have spent the better part of 20 years exploring their shared musical interests\, ranging from Duke Ellington and Jellyroll Morton to Stevie Wonder and Randy Newman. Together\, Josh and Debbie have performed in Switzerland\, Italy and France as well as across the U.S..  Their just released first recording as a duo\, “Vices and Virtues – a live record”  was recorded live in front of an audience in New Orleans with no overdubs or second takes. The recording showcases the pair’s ability to move effortlessly between moods\, genres and musical eras and captures the dynamic range that has become their calling card. The daughter of two opera singers\, Debbie Davis never had a chance. She was born a singer. She made her professional singing debut at the age of two and by the second grade she was traveling with her parents\, performing.  A native of New Jersey Debbie moved to New Orleans in 1997 and began making a name for herself in the local music community singing jazz and all manner of musical styles. \nAt five Joshua Paxton received a little yellow toy piano that he banged on for years\, playing along with TV jingles and music on the radio by ear. At 11 his parents gave into his pleas for piano lessons and bought him his first piano. Josh moved from his native Ohio to New Orleans to study piano with Ellis Marsalis in the mid- 90s.By the time he earned his masters degree in Jazz Piano\, he found that the city had gotten its teeth into him\, so he stayed. \nTonight we’ll also celebrate the opening of the Education Department’s latest exhibition Breakthrough New Orleans: Art Building Community.  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Margie Perez
DESCRIPTION:Margie Perez is a vivacious singer and songwriter specializing in a versatile blend of Blues\, Pop\, and Latin with a New Orleans Funky touch. Dubbed by Offbeat Magazine as “One of the hardest working musicians in New Orleans” she performs in a wide range of musical acts\, especially with her own band that performs her original music. She has just released her latest CD\, “Love Is All” which Offbeat Magazine calls “An Infectious Life Force”. This is a follow up to her New Orleans debut CD\, “Singing For My Supper” on Threadhead Records in 2010\, which WhereYat Magazine called “a pleasing mix of styles and tempos”. \nHere’s what New Orleans music legend Allen Toussaint had to say about Margie: “Not only is she a great singer\, but she’s also a great songwriter. She’s taking New Orleans music in a direction I’ve never seen before.” He invited her to sing backup for him at the 2007 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. She also sang for the late\, great Blues Queen of New Orleans\, Marva Wright who said about her\, “If you don’t know her now\, you will.” \nLaurel’s Licks will also be joining us for an ice cream pop-up! \nPhoto by Erica Goldring. \nPurchase Tickets
