SUMMARY:Roland Guerin
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\nWith a new band and a new project entitled Grass Roots\, New Orleans based producer\, singer-songwriter-bassist Roland Guerin is starting a new musical chapter. Drawing from a wide spectrum of genres\, including American folk\, blues\, zydeco\, rock and jazz\, Guerin creates a singular style at the heart of which are stories told through multi-layered melodies\, rhythms and expressive lyrics in the range of Steely Dan\, John Mayer\, Sting and Peter Gabriel. \nRaised in a musical family – his father was a great lover of jazz and classical music\, his mother\, a blues and zydeco bass player – Guerin began playing bass at the age of 11. Throughout his formative years\, Guerin was strongly influenced by pop\, rock and R&B music of the 70’s and 80’s. Bands and artists such as Cameo\, Dazz Band\, Rush\, the Brothers Johnson\, Gerry Rafferty\, America\, and Booker T & The MG’s seeded his love for great songs and inspired him to write music of his own. \nWhile studying Marketing at Southern University in Baton Rouge\, Guerin joined legendary jazz educator Alvin Batiste’s Band\, The Jazztronauts. Having inherited much of Batiste’s musical innovations and concepts\, Guerin developed ways to bring his own musical voice to life. The jazz genre became his avenue toward success. Over the course of his career\, Guerin toured and performed with numerous legendary musicians\, such as George Benson\, Jimmy Scott\, Frank Morgan\, Vernel Fournier\, Gerry Mulligan\, Allen Toussaint\, John Scofield\, Mark Whitfield\, Ellis Marsalis\, and Marcus Roberts. He also participated in the recording of numerous albums\, including the Blind Boys of Alabama’s Grammy Award winning album Down in New Orleans\, Marcus Roberts’s Grammy Award nominated recording of George Gershwin’s classic Rhapsody in Blue\, and Allen Toussaint’s album Connected. \nAs a member of the Marcus Roberts Trio from 1994 to 2009\, Guerin performed at the head of symphony orchestras across the world\, among which the Berlin Philharmonic\, the Boston Symphony\, the Chicago Symphony\, and Seiji Ozawa’s New Japan Philharmonic. From his collaboration with Ozawa and Roberts\, Guerin developed a deeper understanding and appreciation of orchestration and arrangement\, both of which carry great importance in his own musical composition. \nIn 1998\, Guerin released his first album\, The Winds of the New Land\, featuring Peter Martin on piano\, Nicholas Payton on trumpet\, Donald Edwards on drums\, and Mark Whitfield on guitar. The record was acclaimed for its innovative style of composition and arrangement. JazzReview called it “a literal piece of art”\, while the New Orleans Magazine named Guerin a Contemporary Jazz All-Star. He followed up with an album from the Roland Guerin Sextet\, Live at the Blue Note\, released by Half Note Records\, and released 4 more successful albums in the following decade. \nGuerin joined the Allen Toussaint Band in 2008\, touring and performing with Toussaint until his passing in 2015. During the time with Toussaint\, Guerin found his way back to his musical roots. Integrating American folk melodies\, blues\, zydeco\, African rhythms\, and rock with jazz soloing and orchestral arrangements\, Guerin creates an entirely new and singular musical experience. Shortly afterwards Guerin was asked to join the band of legendary Dr John and soon after to become his last Musical Director. \nIn August 2016\, Guerin released a single entitled Black Coffee. His new album GRASS ROOTS was released on October 18th 2019. STICK TO THE BASICS is the first single on GRASS ROOTS with the release date being April 26th 2019 worldwide.

SUMMARY:Place Over Time: Perspectives on the South Through Film
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a film screening of the 1985 documentary “Sherman’s March\,” the third and final event in a film series exploring the South over time. This event will take place at the Contemporary Arts Center\, located across the street from the Ogden Museum at 900 Camp Street. “Sherman’s March” sets out to follow General William T. Sherman’s infamous scorched-earth march through the Confederacy in the latter stages of the Civil War\, but ends up finding something else. Time Out New York recently listed the film under their 51 Best Documentaries of All Time and said\, “This strikingly perceptive doc is so intimate\, it hurts.” \nThis event is free and open to the public\, thanks to the generous support of The Helis Foundation. Limited seating is available on a first come\, first seated basis. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nAbout PLACE OVER TIME: Perspectives on the South through Film \nPLACE OVER TIME: Perspectives on the South Through Film is a film and conversation series co-organized by Ogden Museum of Southern Art and The Next Orleans Film Society. The series showcases three films by Southern filmmakers with different perspectives on the Southern experience. DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“…one of New Orleans’ great songsmiths and bandleaders of my generation” – Marc Stone  Musician and DJ at WWOZ \n  \nDave Jordan is an award winning\, critically acclaimed roots rocker from New Orleans. For over 20 years he has been a staple of the New Orleans music scene and his work has been described as “the personification of the New Orleans ethos.” Before becoming a “solo” artist he was the bass player/lead singer/founder of the funk band Juice. From the mid/late ‘90’s til late ‘00’s\, Juice released 3 albums and were\, like contemporaries Galactic\, Iris May Tango and All That\, part of the resurgence of New Orleans funk music. From 1999-2003\, they toured relentlessly\, averaging over 180 dates annually. They were recipients of 2000’s Best of the Beat Awards for Best Emerging Funk/Soul/R&B Band and later nominated for Best Roots Rock Band and Album. He has recorded or performed with a host of New Orleans luminaries\, including Art and Cyril Neville\, Anders Osborne\, George Porter\, Joe Krown\, Johnny Vidacovich and countless more. His 2010 solo debut release\, These Old Boots\, co-produced by Grammy winning songwriter/producer Anders Osborne\, was named a Top 10 record of the year by the Times Picayune. \n  \nHis 2013 follow up\, Bring Back Red Raspberry\, was compared to everything from the Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main Street to Tom Petty to John Prine. Hittin’ The Note magazine called it “a polished\, hook heavy gem.” \n  \nAfter the release of BBRR\, Jordan returned to nationwide touring\, focusing mostly on the Gulf Coast down to Key West\, and extended tours in Colorado. Described as “Southern roots rock with a Louisiana soul”\, his band\, dubbed the Neighborhood Improvement Association\, is a rotating cast of some of the finest\, most in demand roots rock\, funk and blues musicians in New Orleans. \n  \nIn 2017 they were nominated in offBeat Magazine’s Best of the Beat Awards for Best Roots Rock Band and Album\, for their 2016 release\, No Losers Tonight. Produced by Jeff Watkins (James Brown\, Joss Stone\, New Orleans Suspects)\, it features 10 originals\, honed and crafted from the band’s 4 years of touring. \n  \nHe has been featured in numerous local\, regional and national publications including Relix\, offBeat\, Times Picayune\, Gambit\, Hittin’ The Note\, An Honest Tune; as well as NPR\, Raw Travel and every local television station. He is also featured- along with Tab Benoit\, Dr. John\, Aaron Neville and more- in the Voice of the Wetlands television commercial\, promoting the awareness and education of rebuilding the LA Gulf coast. 2018 also marks his 10th consecutive appearance at the Voice of the Wetlands Festival. He has also been awarded 3 grants from the Threadhead Cultural Foundation. Founded by a group of avid music lovers after hurricane Katrina\, their mission is to preserve the cultural and musical heritage of New Orleans. The grants have been used to produce his last two records\, as well as his upcoming 2019 release\, Burning Sage. \n  \nAlong with his involvement with VOW\, Dave is active in various organizations in the New Orleans community\, including multiple events with the Team Gleason Foundation and 4 years as a featured guest teacher with Upturn Arts summer art program. Most notably though\, is his work with the New Orleans Musicians Clinic. Besides being featured in their print ad campaign\, Dave is the producer of Jamie’s BigAss Party\, an annual event honoring the legacy and memory of his former bandmate and friend\, Jamie Galloway. Now in it’s 7th year\, the block party/crawfish boil\, held at the Maple Leaf\, has raised over $100\,000 for mental health services provided by NOMC. \n  \nAmerican rock music\, via New Orleans. \n
