SUMMARY:Place Over Time: Perspectives on the South Through Film
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a film screening of “Hands on a Hardbody\,” the second event in a three part film series exploring the South over time. “Hands on a Hardbody” is a documentary about a competition to win a hardbody truck in a small Texas town. It is one of the most enduring and charming portraits of Southern life during the mid-90s and spawned a Broadway musical and a feature screenplay from acclaimed director Robert Altman. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, thanks to the generous support of The Helis Foundation. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Limited seating is available on a first come\, first seated basis. \nDue to its historic architecture\, access to the Patrick F. Taylor Library at the Ogden Museum may only be accessed via a flight of stairs. Therefore\, a viewing of the film will be made available on a 55″ LED screen in an accessible space at the Museum concurrent with the scheduled screening in the Patrick F. Taylor Library. Streaming of the film to your personal device can be coordinated by request by emailing info@neworleansfilmsociety.org. SUMMARY:Extended
DESCRIPTION:The Ogden Museum is proud to be a drop-off site for the Toys for Tots program! Donate a new toy valued at $10 or more when you attend OAH on Dec. 12 and receive free admission for one!  \nHarbinger is the debut Origin release from Extended\, one of New Orleans’ brightest rising star ensembles. This sophomore outing improves upon the solid foundation set with 2016’s eponymous debut\, exhibiting a new attitude and focused maturity after three years of development. \nThe 10 original compositions found here are penned equally by all three members of the band\, and they each present a unique\, deeply contemporary approach to composing for the piano trio setting. Drummer Brad Webb’s rock-tinged melodies collide with pianist Oscar Rossignoli’s dense nearly-classical harmonic approach\, while bassist Matt Booth’s impulse towards the avant-garde centers the three\, keeping them from sliding too far to any extreme. \nFrom this metered approach towards writing and playing\, Extended is able to achieve their goal of making creative\, highly improvisational music that is as “boxless” as possible — they aren’t trying to do anything other than honestly interpret the unique world of each piece. The beauty and the risk with Extended is that each world can shift from performance to performance\, and they’ve had to learn to take comfort in not knowing how it’s all going to go once they step on stage. What they’ve captured on this recording\, then\, is three singular musical identities coming together in ego-less\, democratic service to collective creation. \nYou can find them at: \nextendedtrio.com \ninstagram.com/extendedtrio \nfacebook.com/extendedtrio \nPurchase Tickets\n

SUMMARY:Mike Doussan
DESCRIPTION:Mike Doussan\, a New Orleans native\, started playing guitar at the age of eight and made his way into the New Orleans club scenes in 2004 at the age of 24. With guitar in hand he walked into different clubs with the intent of playing a couple of tunes with whomever was on stage. He then became a regular at The Apple Barrel playing blues with Mike Hood and the Frenchmen St. Delegation\, at Banks St. Bar playing funk with New Orleans Juice and anywhere Eric Lindell was taking stage with his blue-eyed soul ensemble. It wasn’t long before he fronted his own band\, West Bank Mike and the Fisher Project. Rooted in New Orleans funk and blues\, the Fisher Project would go on to win Best Blues Band at the 2006 Sonny Boy Blues Society’s “Battle of the Bands.” \n“Muse in the Kitchen\,” Doussan’s first album was recorded at Word Of Mouth Studios in historic Algiers Point in 2005. The last note being recorded just two days before Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. Luckily\, the music was saved and the album was released in 2006. \nDoussan then recorded “Sin or Salvation” at the Living Room Studio on the New Orleans West Bank. Each track draws on varying influences of rock\, funk\, country\, but all comes together to be an unmistakingly New Orleans sound. Five weeks before its release in March 2014 the Doussan family experienced a tragedy that fundamentally changed Mike’s perspective. His brother\, Brett Doussan\, died by suicide. The song “Spend the Night” was co-written by Mike and Brett along with Dave Jordan and the late Jamie Galloway. \nFollowing the release of “Sin Or Salvation” and the untimely death of his brother\, Doussan joined Dave Jordan and the NIA full time as lead guitarist.  During his tenure with the NIA\, Doussan played a central role in the writing and recording of the NIA’s 2016 release\, “No Losers Tonight.”  After 4+ years of touring and recording with the NIA\, Doussan decided it was time to move on and revisit his own writing and solo career. \nIn August 2017\, Mike Doussan teamed up with Roxy Bergeron of CSB Roxy Music and Bassist/Producer Charlie Wooton to record a collection of all new original songs that were recorded in Music Shed Studios in the Lower Garden District of New Orleans. Grammy-winning engineer Eric Heigle (Arcade Fire\, Lost Bayou Ramblers) was then brought in to mix the record along with Grammy-nominated engineer Pete Lyman (Brandi Carlile\, Jason Isbell\, John Prine) for the final task of mastering at Infrasonic Sound in Nashville.  “Yesterday’s Troubles” was released May 2019. \nOver the past five years since his brother’s death\, Doussan has been working in advocacy and fundraising for both suicide prevention and mental health awareness. His mother\, Lisa\, along with friends and family\, started up a non-profit called the Brett Thomas Doussan Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to raise mental health awareness through advocacy\, education\, and music. Doussan also serves on the executive board of Upturn Arts as Vice President.  Upturn Arts provides arts education that is accessible to children of all socioeconomic backgrounds in the New Orleans area. \nMike is married to his wife of nine years\, Maggie\, and he has three children. They reside in New Orleans. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Valerie Sassyfras
DESCRIPTION:Valerie Sassyfras is a one of a kind entertainer! She plays keyboard\, accordion\, mandolin and loves to make audiences go wild with her “wicked” choreography\, often performed with accompanying visual projections. \nValerie has been delighting audiences for more than 20 years! Even though she has strong roots in cajun and zydeco music\, Sassyfras continues to surprise crowds with fresh and hip new sounds. Some of Valerie‘s songs deal with heavy topics such as heartbreak\, hardships\, and death\, while others speak about roller coasters\, living in a van down by the river and just plain having a good night out with your girlfriends! She truly covers the gamut of human emotion with her songwriting. \nRecently\, Valerie has been featured on the Ellen Show\, Ridiculous on MTV and auditioned for America’s Got Talent Season 14. She has shared the stage with national touring acts such as Tank & The Bangas\, St. Paul and the Broken Bones and Portugal the Man.
