Attendees will gain cultural insight\, technical skill and creative confidence as they explore the artistry behind this longstanding craft. Participants will begin a beaded design on canvas. \nWhat You’ll Learn  \n1. How to identify and select various types of beads and materials. \n2. How to properly thread a needle and securely stitch beads for long-lasting designs. \n3. Multiple beginner-friendly techniques for developing and executing bead patterns. All workshops are conducted in a friendly and welcoming environment. All materials are provided. Membership begins at the low price of $60. \njoin\n\nAbout Marwan Pleasant \nMarwan Pleasant is a fashion designer\, artist and Mardi Gras Indian based in New Orleans\, Louisiana. Pleasant grew up masking with the Golden Eagles tribe of Uptown\, learning the intricate craft of beading from his grandfather\, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux. His fashion brand\, Marlence\, merges Black Masking culture with contemporary design\, bringing the tradition to a global audience. Marwan Pleasant has been featured both globally and nationally\, from the Hôtel de Ville in Paris\, France to The Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Participants will learn about harvesting the palmetto and how to prepare the palmetto to weave. Everyone will learn the foundations of basket weaving and start a palmetto basket. \nAll workshops are conducted in a friendly and welcoming environment. All materials are provided. Luster is described by many as a teacher of Houma traditions\, a healer and a practitioner of tribal ways. she was the first to reintroduce an ancient form of basketry and now teaches the techniques to ensure that the knowledge is not lost again.
