Raised in Muscle Shoals\, Alabama\, Megan received a B.A. in English and Spanish from the University of Alabama in 2003 and a Ph.D in English/Comparative Literature from Tulane University in 2013. The same year\, she began her work with community literacy. She received the 2014 Literacy Champion of Greater New Orleans award. In 2015 she was named one of Gambit Weekly’s “40 Under 40” and New Orleans Magazine’s “People to Watch.” In 2021\, she gave a TEDx Talk titled “Becoming Part of the Story” on becoming an advocate for adult literacy. Her efforts to remove barriers to books and support citywide literacy in New Orleans were recognized by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities in 2023\, when she was the recipient of the Light Up for Literacy Award. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of hand quilting using repurposed textiles at this Craft Happy Hour! \nParticipants will work on making a unique piece of functional art that can be sewn onto their favorite jacket or tote bag once completed. Utilizing vintage handkerchiefs and quilting perle cotton\, participants will learn quilt composition and planning. TO BE PUT ON THE WAITING LIST\, PLEASE EMAIL EDUCATION@OGDENMUSEUM.ORG.  \nJoin Kaori Maeyama\, a New Orleans urban landscape painter and Louisiana Contemporary\, Presented by The Helis Foundation artist\, for a solvent-free oil painting demonstration.  \nMaeyama will demonstrate her unique application process that blends printmaking techniques with oil painting. Similar in process to monotype\, unconventional mark making tools (such as brayers and squeegees) are used in a subtractive painting method while creating a monochromatic composition with mood and atmosphere. Participants will have the opportunity to try their hand at this unique process. \nThe demonstration includes a brief exhibition tour and discussion of the artist’s work featured in Louisiana Contemporary\, Presented by the Helis Foundation and related work in Knowing Who We Are: A 20th Anniversary Exhibition. \nAll workshops are conducted in a friendly and welcoming environment. She is a member of Staple Goods collective in the St. Claude Arts District and teaches at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts and Tulane University. Maeyama is represented by LeMieux Galleries.

Her work has been the subject of institutional solo exhibitions at the Georgia Museum of Art\, the Joslyn Art Museum\, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) and Atlanta Contemporary\, as well as a commissioned solo project with Creative Time. Her sculpture\, Love is like the sea… (2023) is currently on view on the Poydras Corridor Sculpture Exhibition presented by The Helis Foundation in New Orleans\, LA. Hamilton holds a PhD in American Studies from New York University and an MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University. She lives and works in New York. \nAbout Lauren Groff \nLauren Groff is the “New York Times” bestselling author of four novels\, “The Monsters of Templeton\,” “Arcadia\,” “Fates and Furies” and “Matrix\,” as well as the celebrated short-story collections “Delicate Edible Birds and Florida\,” a 2018 National Book Award finalist. She graduated from Amherst College and has an MFA in fiction from the University of Wisconsin Madison. \n“Fates and Furies” was a “New York Times” bestseller\, a finalist for the National Book Award\, and Amazon’s #1 Best Book of the Year in 2015. Murrow and Gracie Award-winning radio and podcast producer and host. She’s currently President of School of Humans\, and producer of iHeart Media’s hit podcasts Hell and Gone and Unreformed. \nHer history in public media began at WWOZ Community Radio in New Orleans. From WWOZ\, Prescott went on to host Georgia Public Broadcasting’s On Second Thought and Atlanta History Center’s Virtual Author Talks\, then New Hampshire Public Radio’s (NHPR) Word of Mouth\, Writers on A New England Stage\, the Top Ten Podcasts Civics 101 and The 10-Minute Writers Workshop.
