These handmade wallets are part of a collaboration between Mark Bradford, the Los Angeles-based artist who is representing the United States at La Biennale di Venezia 57th International Art Exhibition, and the nonprofit social cooperative Rio Tera dei Pensieri. RTdP provides opportunities for work placement and social reintegration to men and women within Venice’s prison system. RTdP and Bradford have established, staffed, and run a storefront and resource center in Venice, Italy called Process Collettivo. The space sells RTdP’s artisanal products and functions as a resource center where formerly incarcerated persons can access support services and workshops that teach practical skills and provide access to employment. The power of the world stage during this prominent biennial exhibition and Bradford’s efforts to elevate the visibility of and discourse around this critical issue works to reshape perceptions about the penal system and formerly incarcerated persons.
