UNO Charter Schools Come to The Ogden

Thanks to an Entergy New Orleans, Inc. 2009 Community Partnership Grant and the expertise of Dr. Sharon Shaffer, Director of the Smithsonian Early Enrichment Center, the Capital One-UNO Charter School Network and The Ogden have been able to partner to create a literacy enhancement program that begins in the classroom and continues in the museum. At the schools, teachers read different books for each grade level:  an introduction to museums and art for Pre-K through Matthew’s Dream, a discussion of seasons with Frederick for Kindergarten, and, for the first grade, an exploration of neighborhood with Tar Beach. Several prints from the museum’s collection amplify the reading of the books, and the students come to see these works first hand and experience the museum. After the museum visit, the art teachers design projects for them consistent with the museum curriculum. The Pre-K, Kindergarten and First Grade from Medard H. Nelson, Gentilly Terrace, and Pierre A. Capdau came to The Ogden in early December. They will return in February of 2010 for another book-related visit and, in the spring, for the opening of the exhibition of the art they create in conjunction with the program.
